Ok, rev, so long as we see some progress pics by the 4th it looks like you've got some breathing room til the 9th. I'm happy about this as I'd think it would be a shame for you to miss out.

2012 Pipe In the Hat Trade

Post by mredmond »

For what it's worth, this is by far the most structured PITH of the four I've been involved in. In the past it's never been a big deal if someone needed a little extra time, as the emphasis was on participation. I don't think the drawings were even done on time. I think extensions for those that need it should be fine. That said, I might need to make use of one, too. I plan to finish this coming weekend, but a little wiggle room might be helpful. the time spent so far ended up being a bust because of a hidden giant pit which resulted in a broken shank. : /

Yeah, I agree. Emphasis should be on participation. Looks like we're just going to extend the general deadline to the 9th of Feb.

Granted I am excited to see the name drawings done, I think more time for others is perfect since the more participation the better. All the pipes so far look great.

I vote to give Rev until the 9th.
Not because I give a crap about his pipe, just that I need until the 9th to finish mine

Yeah, I haven't even started mine yet, and won't be able to 'till Friday. I'm still pretty sure I can have one finished by the 4th though...

the ninth would help me greatly. i'm getting there but the stem is not what i want it to be. i'll be mostly done buy the fourth i think but the breathing room would make for a better end product. after seeing everyone else's work i'm almost embarrassed i joined, but it's definitely making me want to make more pipes and hone my (lacking) skills more. not fishing for compliments or trying to sound negative, i just didn't realize how under-practiced i was until i tried this project! man am i learning though!

oh, that was my progress pictures. I have to do final sanding, rustication, stem shaping, staining and polishing. no problem :) Can easily finish in a day, will have two days just to be sure before the new date.

thanks again

oh, sorry for the bad pictures, but the pipe looks pretty close.

I will not rush, I have 20 hours for her still, I am guessing I won't use half that, but if I have to use it all... it will be beautiful

So here is mine. This is only my second pipe so it is not as nice as the other pipes i've seen. I was trying to go for a reverse calabash so the hole through the shank is 7/16 in diameter. The ends are brass caps that have the mortise for the stem and the ball. The plan was to have a smooth finish but I uncovered inclusions in the briar so I decided to sandblast it. I had fun working on this for the PITH and look forward to doing it again next year.

Sorry I was trying to make it bigger. I guess that is as big as it is going to be. Let me know if you can't see it.
