First real rustication experiment

Made the nail tool, it was fun. I enjoyed watching it tear chunks of briar out. I hit it with the wire brush afterwards and I feel it turned out okay. I was trying to search some final finishing techniques, but of course I feel left with more questions than answers. I dont think it will try melting wax into the crevasses, but will start by trying out different cuts of shellac. Sas are you still using your orange 5lb cut?

Yeah, its pretty fun to play around with. I will probably be using it more with all the lack luster briar I got on deck.

I have been beating this pipe up since I posted the picture. I threw an unfinished stem on it, and have been smoking it nonstop. 11cm long and almost 4cm tall, the bowl is 16mm in diameter. CD Opening Night really shines with this pipe!

nice rustification, so nail tool and wire brush? for the craggy nail tool texture is it usually wire brushed?

would also like to know recommended cut of shellac for rustification and blasts. every time i've tried it with 1-2lb cut the finished texture seems too matte and picks up dust when handling, only way i managed to fix it was buffing after which tends to round off the texture or fill up little pores and holes. have blonde dewaxed flakes and also brown button shellac non-dewaxed

How big/fine is your wire wheel?

I just used the little one that came with the dremel. I recentlt bought a couple of bigger ones. I just used it to smooth out the effect of the nail tool.

Nice rustication indeed, I have never liked rustications at all, but this one looks kinda "natural", which I like. Good job!

Thanks Albert. I'm not a big fan of it either, but I figured I'd give it a try because can't sandblast.

Thanks. I had read what Tyler wrote about it on pipedia before I did it. I think what is most important is to make sure you get everything rusticated nice and good, and then go over it again. He said the problem many times is people don't do it thoroughly enough. Afterwards I hit is with a small dremel brush to clean it and smooth it over a bit.
