What's an UnderBender? They are evil, delusional pipe makers who...

Never mind, they already know who they are.

appreciate beautiful lines and don't want their pipes to be ugly like that monstrosity?

That was a guess. I could be wrong.

blindly underbend because they saw one of the Danes underbend one stem, and now they think it is superior in design.

Or, going a step further, they only saw a Danish-made pipe that had once been left on a car's dashboard in July in Phoenix, and assumed it was deliberate. Because, you know, Danish pipe.

It's all starting to make sense, now.

That's not an under-bent stem, that's a periscope.

And Todd spent some time in DaneLand, so he's only sorta 'Murrican.

I don't understand. Are You saying that stem is underbent? Thanks, Norm.

An underbent stem has visual tension to it. A bent stem caters to the familiar. Now this pipe in particular looks ugly from a shaping and proportion standpoint, but the stem is nice. The bend in this composition works better than the rest of the pipe. Composition is a case-by-case basis thing. An underbent stem looks bad when the maker doesn't understand what he's doing. When it's done tastefully, it can be great.

For that matter, so do I. I can make an oompa-loompa look good just by standing next to one.

Are you sure you put tobacco in your pipe tonight?

Not on the Ashton, the Neptune he linked is underbent. However, maybe LL was referring to Underbenders are over bending the stem like the Ashton, which I would call overbenders. I need to go on a bender.

Me too, although I blindly underbend because I am violently reacting against the feeling I sometimes get that certain pipes have the same visual impact as a handlebar mustache when the stem is bent too far.

A lot of the time a stem bent with the bite zone parallel to the rim of the bowl gives me the "OCD itch" something fierce, and I can't stand not having it slightly underbent.

What's the cure for my condition? Desensitization through exposure? Valium? Huffing vegan shellac?

I generally know how things are supposed to look, but a lot of the time a stem bet with the bite zone parallel to the rim of the bowl gives me the "OCD itch" something fierce, and I can't stand not having it slightly underbent.

Nothing. You are correct despite what the old dude might say.

I was inserting a milk soaked oreo into my mouth as I read this. It was almost, really messy.

I have to say IAWR&N&J, I think underbent just sometimes looks better. I know Premal and I have had the function vs. form conversation, and he weighs in on the function side, but I have to argue that these lovely, graceful underbent stems are not NOT functioning.... they are totally smokeable, maybe more difficult to clench, but I've taken to 'hanging' an underbent stem by catching the button behind my teeth, and it hangs comfortably. I'm not clenching, per SE, but it is hands free..... if it was a lovely form, but that shit just wouldn't smoke, then I would cry foul... but that Neptune looks amazing... how would it look with a more-bent stem? Photoshop any one?
