PME faux ivory

Post by Joe Hinkle Pipes »

I came across this material in a catalog that showed up unannounced at the Briar Lab. It looks like the same material that PME used to sell. I know a few guys here use this stuff from time to time. Steve probably stocks it as well, although I haven't seen it on his website. here is the link if anyone is interested. https://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/p/9/ ... rm=104-344

It looks slightly different than what PME was selling, but it's a nice material! I don't think Steve does sell faux Ivory. I did find the same stuff once elsewhere and I've since lost track of the link.

It's a polyester manufactured here in the UK, I use it to make stems, works well but doesn't hold a heavy bend.

I've used it(the PME stuff) a few times and it polishes up beautifully, but can be a bit of a pain to work with, from my experience anyways.

I've worked with the stuff from Masecraft. It's pretty brittle and sharp tools are a must, but it looks great. Word to the wise, though: try to avoid using red tripoli on it if you can, or it can tend to discolor a bit.
