Billiard #6

Billiard 6, 4 and 5 were neither worth posting. I feel like 6 is going in the right direction, I'm trying to take as many of the comments I have received as possible and incorporate them into the products.


Need to crisp up my funnel some, had an issue with the engraver as well. I am still not getting the polish I want, but its better with every pipe.

Any comments appreciated.

My major comment is about the line of the stem. It appears to bulge a bit starting about 1/4 the way from the stem shank junction. Ideally, there should be a straight taper from the stem shank junction to the back of the button.
A very, very slight concavity may give the illusion of straightness. This principle is used in architecture- Classical Greek columns for instance.
Emery nail boards are useful for subtle shaping of a tapered stem.
Also, the bottom of the bowl should be more rounded. Picture the bottom of the bowl in a billiard as part of a sphere from the Tropic of Capricorn to the South Pole.

Thanks DocAitch, you are right about the stem. When I run my fingers down the sides I can feel it but I didn't notice that until you pointed it out. That goes back to my initial stem shaping on the lathe... I should have straightened the entire length of it instead of just the stem-shank junction. It would be easier on a metal lathe, I just need to slow down on that step a little.

I dropped a circle on the side profile to get a better understanding of what I need to do, ill work on it for the next one.

The rim looks concave? A slight convex to many appears more attractive, and it is much easier to finish.

It is concave, I will correct that for the next try.
