Anyone made Similar? Architect - by Dirk Heinemann

Post by tmswell »

Afternoon PMF -- Has anyone here shaped anything like Dirk Heinemann's Architect?
Wondering about your experience, what you ran into while making something similar, and design suggestions.
I'm designing something inspired a bit by these, wondering about suggestions to include in the design process.
(one of which is knowing I'll need to do angled drilling from the mortise and air hole --depending on the tenon/stem connection with the mortise).
Any other thoughts on what would be important to note, remember, or design for a shape like this?

That is one of those shapes that you either love, or want nothing to do with.
Unfortunately, although those pipes appear to be well crafted, I am in the second category.
That shape will require keyhole drilling, but otherwise, I would not predict any particular problems.

As am I, for this one. I don't love Dirk's more "out-there" shapes, but I think his egg/tomato shapes are very aesthetically appealing:

Yeah, that tomato with the flared shank and stem is beautiful

That one has been up for sale @ Blue Room for awhile. If I had more disposable income, I'd pick it up in a heartbeat. I think it's absolutely gorgeous and referenced it a lot when trying my hand at a tomato shape.

I recall seeing similar shapes made for Wally frank in the 1940s or earlier and Rolando Negoita has made many as well back in the 2000s. It can be drilled similar to a hawk bill where the ramping is opposite in the mortise. A keyhole can be avoided.

Thanks for the info -- would you mind elaborating on ramping in the mortise? do you mean going from wide diameter to narrow? Sorry to ask -- just want to make sure I understand!
Thank you!

I am curious as well. My understanding (frequently flawed as it is) was that keyhole drilling was drilling the mortise and the draught hole on 2 different axes with the mortise aimed parallel with the shank and the draft hole aimed at the bottom of the bowl. If the angles are such that you can pass a cleaner from button to chamber, you are done. If there is obstruction to the cleaner, a ramp must be cut in the bottom of the mortise to guide the cleaner into the draught hole.
When you look at the bottom of the mortise, it looks like an old fashioned key hole.

Keyhole drilling is when the mortise doesn't cover up the airway hole at the shank face. The alternative is to angle the mortise and airway so the airway hits high in the bottom of the mortise without intersecting the top of the mortise at the shank face. Keyhole drilling leaves a divot which allows the tenon to expand to fit. Either method done properly will allow a pipe cleaner to pass.

Ramping or keyholes are also meant for unobstructed airflow in addition to the passing of a pipe cleaner.

A keyhole is better than ramping in my opinion, a ramped airway is just a place for gunk to build up, a keyholed mortise doesn't really affect anything if it's not too severe (more than a couple of mm into the mortise).

As to the Architect shape I recall one of the japanese guys made a very beautiful version, can't really remember who it was (Ichi Kitahara perhaps?)

Agree.
But funny that there are still pipesmokers who think that keyholes are mess-ups.

Yes, but I formed my opinion before it was demonstrated to me that an unobstructed airway markedly reduces the use of pipe cleaners. I have developed a habit of using pipe cleaners during every smoke until I started smoking pipes with decent, well engineered airways.
Ah well, I have upgrade my data banks.
