Stinky Pipe
I just got a new unsmoked pipe in the mail from a popular online shop, made by a very popular high grade pipe maker and it smells like a sweaty butthole. It’s almost as if someone carried it around between their butt cheeks while they ran coast to coast. Without a bath.
Jokes aside, is there anything I can do to get rid of the odor? Will it eventually dissipate after I smoke it?

Re: Stinky Pipe
Is it a combination of stinky ebonite and stinky Briar?

It’s not ebonite. I know what that smells like. It seems to be more the inside of the bowl than the stummel, but I guess it could be stinky briar. I know some pipe makers use yogurt in the bowl coating, so I’m wondering if that’s it. I smells kind of like milk that has turned, but not that exactly.PremalChheda wrote:Is it a combination of stinky ebonite and stinky Briar?

I'd say send the maker a direct message?

I really wish we had smell-o-grams. I'm dying of curiosity.
Perhaps we should play 20 questions about the nature of the smell? Is it a chemical smell, or does it smell like something rotting?
I know personally that I can taste and smell Danish oil finishes on pipes that haven't been cured properly. Not pleasant. Although it's also possible it's coming from the bowl coat.

Re: Stinky Pipe
Bowl coating is my first thought, unless it’s been smoked and not cleaned. Salt and alcohol may get flavors and smells out, but if it’s the bowl coating itself, sand it off and clean the inside with alcohol.

That’s probably the best course of action.Massis wrote:I'd say send the maker a direct message?

Definitely something rotting. Not at all chemical. It reminds me of soured milk, but also the ketone sweet rotting fruit odor of a diabetic. It’s hard to describe without being rude.Ocelot55 wrote:I really wish we had smell-o-grams. I'm dying of curiosity.

I really think that’s what it is. For certain it’s never been smoked. I’ll sand off the bowl coat and carefully clean it with alcohol like you said. Thank you.sandahlpipe wrote:Bowl coating is my first thought, unless it’s been smoked and not cleaned. Re: Stinky Pipe
My guess is a yogurt-based chamber coating.
Why everyone doesn't simply use that special briar that never, ever burns---you know, what that Nigerian guy sells---I'll never understand. Life would be SO much simpler.

I know Savinelli's "liquirizia" line has ANISE flavoring added. Maybe somebody was inspired to do their own version but made a typo on the order form when purchasing the flavoring agent?
