Thanks. In this business knowing a good toolmaker is very valuable indeed.

For those going to be there, Trent is usually at the chicago show with drill bits and other tooling.

Hi,
I have two bits from him that I've been using for a while and they still cut clean and smooth holes.
BTW - Trent is a real nice guy too.

Best to all,
Steven Magruder Morrisette

What kind of bits?

Are his bits reworked spade bits or twist drill bits?

Trent has a website also:
http://www.briarpipetooling.com/

I visited his shop on the way back from the Kansas City show and he has a great set up to do anything with metal. He listens to what you need lets you know what he has or what he can make for you.

While I was there he showed me a drill bit that a customer returned that "wouldn't drill" and it worked just fine. What he found out was that the customer's equpiment was not working properly - alignment issues. That customer has since "upgraded" from his home made rig and bought Jet equipment.

Suggestion - if you have a problem with anyone's tooling, please contact them and let them know - the problem won't get fixed on a forum.

I saw another tooling maker who suggests that lesser quality "foreign" steel is used to make the bits. Mine are Silver and Demming, not Silver and Demming "style" bits. And the last time I checked, the Swedes and Germans were making really good steel :D

Heh. I saw that too and thought the exact same thing. I was mildly amused by it.

The Japanese also have some excellent steels in production - especially in the tool steel and particle metallurgy worlds.
