Claudio Cavicchi Rustication Finishing

I have a couple of Cavicchi pipes and they are both rusticated. The finish on them is very shiny and they look great. Does anyone know if he uses shellac or lacquer on these pipes? I'd be surprised if it wasn't shellac. In fact, I'd bet your life on it.

Here's a recent one I did with shellac. Looks suspiciously similar in shine if not in tooling.

That pipe started life as an experimental finish, wire wheel in a dremel, which if you are careful, reveals some of the fine structure in the wood, on straight grain. It's dicey as hell on anything else.

Was showing it to a prospective client, who asked if I could do a version of the lighter form of "Radice Rind" finish on a full bent with cumberland. I came pretty close (close enough he jumped on the pipe).



BTW I don't really have any shots of the finished product. Was in a hurry to ship it. In all honesty, I didn't think it was worth posting here as a gallery piece because it wasn't an advance for me in technology or shaping (I've done a half dozen similar full bents now).
