Hi everybody,

after some time off, while setting up my new workshop, I'm back.

This is the first finished pipe from the new shop.

New shape: Ryukin

There's much to improve here but at least I have the feeling I'm on my way and getting somewhere...












If it's not spots it's fussels...













Ryukin is the Japanese name of a veiltail goldfish. For the Chinese it's 'Chi Yu'. Thoughts and comments on this pipe will be highly appreciated as always...

since i am a great admirer of the Japanese pipe stile i will congratulate you on this monolithic appearing Goldfish!
There is balance in the dynamic gesture of the shape that circulates,the grain and finish are exceptional!

Steffen, that's far from my kind of pipe, but once again, your ability to display one type of graining per surface just astonishes me. And yet it has a defined shape. That's really cool.

Love this one.
The only improvement I can think of is that it would look much, much better with my face attached to the stem end of this pipe...

Sorry people,

call me modest but in my eyes this is simply not true. I am fully content with it being called a 'good pipe'. If there had to be a comparison I would compare it to my own pipes (maybe I'm not so competitive...) and in this context is it that I said 'I'm on my way'. But there ist still a long way to go until my hands can do what my mind can see.

But anyway: Thanks a million for the compliments, they make me very happy!

I agree with Sas on this one. Your positioning is fantastic! Well done.

I enjoyed seeing your "Ryukin" pipe very much! Although i have yet to carve my 1st pipe (which is a kit coming from Pimo's in a couple of days) i have been observing pipes on this forum and on youtube. I am just amazed at the artwork i am seeing. Keep up the good work.

That is a cool pipe
If one was to offer critisim(whitch soothes me well now before I've had my morning coffie) I would say this:
The way you placed the shape in block makes the straight grain wash out in several places caused by the grain fanning out more severe than the shape is cut
One of the hardest things with assymetrical pipes like this is making it look good from all angles and juging from your pictures (witch many times does not do pipes like this justice) the shank looks a bit fat compared to the bowl when veiwed from above..but now with my coffie in hand I can honestly say its already starting to look better

I understand what you say (I already had my morning coffee... ) and I am definitely working on this. The problem here was also the quite extreme fanning of the grain. Plus the block was not evenly grained as you can see looking on the pipes right side.

I now have a block with really good grain I am planning to start working on this afternoon. Hope all goes well...

Will you be at the Chicago show this year?

Sadly no.. we will not go this year we have'nt been able to save up enough pipes for it to be a profitable trip.. pluss this spring I will try to get our old workshop on wheels "the Pipe wagon" in good enough shape for people to stay in it..I basically need to rebuild 3 of thew 4 outer walls from scratch + the roof but once its done it will be a sweet little guest house for our visitors here and with ocean veiw at that



Heres a pic of it from when we used it as a workshop.. its from the 1930ties and built in a circus wagon factory in Dresden.. 18 square meters we plan to have it for guests and pipemaker freinds visiting..but it requres a great deal of refurbishing to reach its old state of glory

Too bad to hear that. I would have been glad to meet you there.

But the pipe wagon looks great! I would have loved to find one of those. I hope you can get it in good shape again.

Same here...I take this as an invitation. Please let me know when I can come over. I'll be leaving my three kids with the grandparents and use this as a get-a-away with the wife. You're swell!
