What did yer 1st pipes look like?

Hello. I'm new to the group and am positively hooked. The history of my present obsession was something that remotely resembled a pipe I carved from backyard peachwood. I have found that most of my questions have already been answered several times over by the Big Boys. However, one thing I would like to know of those that have been carving for a long while is what your first pipes looked like. Thanks for letting me share. I apologize if I placed this in the wrong category, I'm still learning the Forum norms.

Crap. They all look like crap for awhile. Even when you're certain your first pipes are awesome, they are crap.

I'm still a novice, but even I have to agree on this one

I don't often show it, but here's my first pipe. Fortunately, I've gotten much better since then.

This has my vote. Went the same for me. Thought I was making pretty decent pipes but in hindsight they were total crap.

Possitively hideous. You are brave to show it in public.
Oh yeah, mine were crap too. Just not as bad as Ernie's.

I would just like to add that all the pipes in this thread look pretty much like first pipes to me.

In all seriousness Badger, we all started somewhere. Some of us with pre-drilled kits, some of us just dove in. But we all made ugly pipes for awhile. Some of us for years.
I came into pipe making with a full workshop, hundreds of hours of carving and thousands of hours of wood finishing experience. It all added up to make some very ugly pipes. Getting a round bit of rubber stuck in a block of wood is not that complicated. Making the thing look nice takes some skill, some understanding, and mostly practice.
This is a very intimidating board to join and start posting stuff on. But don't be shy. Nobody is going to laugh or tell you it's hopeless (we've got Ernie for that).
I'm not sure who would win an "ugliest pipe I ever made" contest around here. That would be a fun one...

C'mon now. You've read this thread. Ernie already posted his first pipe.

Bad enough that I won't post a picture. Should have started with basics first and then branched out. (shudders and

It hasn't been THAT long, but I still think it's quite a crappy kit-pipe.
I still love it though, and I do still smoke it. It's actually a great smoker, but that's not my achievement as it's a kit pipe so airway and stummel were pre-drilled...
Here she is:

This was mine:
I was trying to copy a Ben Wade freehand I had. I bought a block of eBay and didn't even consider what I'd do for a stem, I just figured you could go to a tobacco shop and get a stem. I was so clueless. Now I'm just less clueless, but still pretty clueless.
This was the 2nd pipe I made, and the first pipe where I made the stem as well. (Insert stem jokes here)
Too bad most everyone else is too chicken to show their first pipe.... Only a few brave souls out there I guess.

All right, I'll play along. This is really embarrassing:
Yeah...pretty bad.
I'm not a natural at this by any means. I just don't know when to quit!
