flake or spray shellac for amateur maker

Trying to determine which method I should use. I'm leaning towards Zinsser due to the eas of use. I'm finishing my first pipe and don't plan to quit my day job.

I've gathered that flake shellac should be cut with denatured alcohol to about a 4 or 5-pound cut. The resultant mixture should be filtered. I assume a coffee filter would work here?

I've also read on here some use Zinsser spraycan shellac on a pipecleaner. I started looking and found the following comment from another thread "The Zinsser Seal-Coat is 2 Lb dewaxed. The Zinsser Shellac (both clear and amber) have wax. Not sure what cut they are though."

So, if I use Zinsser, which product should I use.

Neither, buy it pre mixed in a can. Spray is messy/imprecise (if you're me) and cutting shellac is more expensive than buying a good Zinser 100% wax free can. You'll get good results and save yourself $15-$20.

You will probably need to cut just about anything you buy. Shellac thinner or methyl hydrate or ethyl alcohol (safest) work.

I buy Zinnser in the smallest can at Ace and thin it with denatured alcohol until I get a finish that gleams rather than shines.

The older shellac gets, the longer it takes to dry until finally it just stays sticky, so a smaller can is more desirable than the "large economy size" for pipes. Even the smallest cans will get too old before you run out, unless you're making a lot of pipes

Go with the first one. Wax free. You will probably need to cut it, but you can use it straight too, just depends on the look you're after. Full strength is very shiny, 1:1 cut with DNA will gleam like Rad says.

PS: While at the store looking at baby food jars to mix the shellac and alcohol in, and knowing I would eat said baby food to empty the jar, I chose the fruit medley instead of the turkey dinner. I've never had my jaw wired shut, but pureed turkey dinner didn't sound appetizing.

Our baby eats most of the combinations Hence I have about 25-30 of those glass containers lying around, I actually use them to store tobacco in!
