Second pipe, dublinishfreehandsortof

Hello you good people.

I was planning on doing another billiard as a second pipe but as i was waiting (and still am...) new jaws for my lathe i played around with this block, sketching a billiard on its side and thinking how to proceed, after a few cuts the block stated that it would not be a billiard (stubborn fella') so i had no choice but to go freehand on its ass.

So, here she be: pipe #2:

Freehands are traditionally impossible to judge since there are no standards for them (altough many early freehands i've seen do often posess the same basic dublin/cherry/etc. qualities, so much that i've come think of them as a 'traditional freehand'...) but the overall workmanship can be judged upon so, ALL and ANY comments and critique are warmly welcomed.

Cheers and have a good weekend!

Really like the shank to stem transition, the grain, the color, hell, the whole pipe.
Gees! hope my 2nd pipe looks that good :D

I think there is a lot to like in this pipe for sure- I love the flowing subtlety on the top of the bowl.

However, I feel like the stem does not fit with the rest of the pipe. I think a different style shank/stem could make for a more flowing and unified design- however, it is good to experiment and see what you can do, I think this is a great second pipe.

Can't wait to see your next one!

Cheers!

That's an awesome second pipe. Mine wasn't nearly as nice and neither is my third.

THIS is your second pipe?
Come on man, don't show that kind of stuff... People here work for months (or years even) to make a pipe with such clean lines and nice finish!
The stem might in fact not be the very bestest option for that bowl shape, but I personally like it a lot. It's a triangular half-saddle, that's a bold and cool thing to do on your second pipe.
Seriously, great work.

Did you have a mentor, or should I just shoot myself now? :banghead:

Looks like we have a pipemaking Savant on our hands.

He must have meant second pipe that's sold for over $200.

That's what I choose to believe anyway. Takes the pressure off a bit. :@

dreamer, powell, rodney, Thank you for your kind words. Much, much appreciated.

keilwerth, yeti, Thank you guys, i know what you mean. I felt something odd with the stem and bowl pair from the very beginning, i re-did the saddle at some point and that helped quite a lot actually, but there still is something... I just really can't put my finger on it... Observations welcomed.

And as for the clean lines, Sas told me last time to get my s**t together and lines cleaned, so i dared not to. I cleaned 'till my fingers bled... Might have been the reddish stain in my hands but anyway..., i tried to keep 'em pure.

i'm also very eager to see what you are up to!
Ocelot55: Did you have a mentor, or should I just shoot myself now?
Please don't, as i recall you might be an andangered species :). All you guys are my mentos, i mean my mentor :)...

Looks great to me. Nice pipe. Very nice for your second. I like the half saddle treatment as well.

Well, geez, whatever I told you, you wanna tell me back, and then I can go do it? Cuz clearly it worked, whatever it was.

I'll add a "well done". That's a stupendous 2nd effort.

I think there are refinements of balance, proportion, probably the way the saddle is cut, but really that's trivial stuff on a very nice pipe.

As it is said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and my beholding eye thinks this is beautiful pipe. The flow is there, across the top of the shank and stem. The underside of the stem is bold and keeps it from being mundane. Great piece of wood and very well cut to emphasize the grain and bird's eyes.
Workmanship, fit and finish look first rate. Keep'em coming.

Now I'll tell you what I really think. This is the second pipe he's not embarrassed to put up here. How many rejects has he burned to keep warm on those cold Finnish nights?

Chas.

Thank you gentlemen!

Propably a stroke of luck this time, let's see what happens with the next one... There's always room for more refinement, i dread the day i would be completely satisfied with a pipe i've produced.

$? I haven't sold any yet but i thought a handful of peas is the going rate these days... :). Someone's been yankin' my chain :).

Ahh yes, the nights are indeed cold. And so are the days too :)...

I have a challenge for you. I want to see you make a pipe from some of that super-good Finnish plywood. Should be a looker but probably not smokable due to the glue it is put together with. :P
I've used it in the past on some cabinet work and it is of much higher quality than the so-called "Baltic Birch".
Chas.

Heh, i just might take you up on that challenge Chas :). Can't promise it's the next thing i'll do but at some point i will try :).

There are a couple glue options for the plywood but neither probably would smoke too well, or actually might smoke a bit too well :)... Not to mention the fact that as i have understood, pipes made out of birch tend to taste like piss when smoked...

Now I know why that last plywood project had a rather gamey, pungent aroma when cut.
Most likely caused by the reindeer whizzing on the trees all the time.

Sweet pipe. I have no critique as most has already been given. Great work, and if this is your second pipe I don't like you

I'm of course kidding, stick with it. Can't wait to see no. 3!
