Removing carnauba wax
Removing carnauba wax
I just finished my pipe and noticed some scratches I missed. Also I wanted to stain the plateaux with black dye. I was wondering if a tripoli buff will take of the the carnauba wax and if it will, will the wax ruin the tripoli buffing wheel? Thanks for you help, Kevin.

Re: Removing carnauba wax
I'd just sand it. It might load the paper for a short time, but it should be fine.

What about the plateaux? I won't be able to get into the groves a crevices with the sand paper. I was thinking mineral spirits but would prefer to buff if possible.

Re: Removing carnauba wax
I wouldn't rely on buffing to remove wax. I would use acetone but maybe someone can suggest something better.

Re: Removing carnauba wax
I used a wire wheel to remove the bark... somebody suggested it will work to remove wax as well.

as jesse(ocelot) said I would sand to get the scratches out and just stain the plateau overtop of the carnuba. its penetrable.

Is it? Have you ever tried it? I wouldn't recommend stain over wax but what do I know.

Re: Removing carnauba wax
You can stain over it, but it's not plan A. Carnauba dissolves in alcohol. Most of our dyes are alcohol based. Even though the dye dissolves and displaces the wax, it doesn't get rid of the wax. Subsequent layers of whatever can go on unevenly as a result.

Sand it off or use alcohol (dna) to take it off. Don't buff it off.

Re: Removing carnauba wax
Thank you all for the advice. First, In a small corner I tried the wire wheel. That was a bad idea because it left a dull gray residue and didn't take off the wax effectively. Next I went with alcohol and that worked out well enough. It didn't remove the wax from all the crevices but the alcohol based dye cut through the rest. Thanks again, Kevin.
