Buffing Wheel fluff

Post by Eldritch »

Hello all

I'm looking for some advice!

The problem is that when I'm applying carnauba wax I'm getting bits of buffing wheel fluff stuck on the pipe.
Does this happen to anyone else? If so, what's the remedy?

Kind regards

You could be buffing at a too high RPM.
I charge my buffer @ 1750RPM, then buff at 600RPM.
If you don't have a variable speed motor, a light touch is always better. Additionally, a second wheel, sans compound, can be used to smooth out the wax.

Take a piece of hard wood and buff the hell out of it .no more fluff.Take a soft flame and move it around the pipe with fluff, burns off rapidly.Don't get crazy with the flame, burns off fast.use your piece of wood you buffed for initial time. :thumbsup:also buffer speed as stated by bruce is important, slow down.you will do a better job. :D

Yes, RPM could be the issue...AND new mops too.

I knew the RPMs were high but unavoidable on my grinder, thought using 4" instead of 6" mops would counter the fact.
However, looks like I can pick up a mop arbor I can chuck on the lathe, so low RPMs will be possible.

Now I'm gonna buff the hell out of some scrap!

Cheers guys, much appreciated.

Kind regards.

Did you prep your wheels before first use?

I didn't prep. Is that the same as buffing some scrap wood?

Yeah buff some scrap wood (clean) and if possible get a friend to stand nearby with a vacuum to try and catch the fluff, there will be a lot!

Are you also using shellac before your wax? If so you might be applying this too thick which makes it gummy when buffed and also catches fluffy bits.

If the shellac hasn't dried completely you can have the same problem. It will feel dry, but will still be evaporating.

andrew & caskwith,
I have experimented with light use of shellac - so yes, I probably could do with giving it longer to dry!
I could be accused of being a little bit eager to crack on...

Longer to dry and maybe a thinner cut.

use sandpaper - resin backed low grit to true the wheel up with coats of whatever will be on the wheel in-b-tween. Make sure you have a vac on it or you will be covered with fuzz.

@ PremalChheda

Unbelievably, that also helps lots. I was beginning to think I'd need to check the runout on my chuck there was too much wobble for my liking.

Cheers

I remember walking into the house all covered in fuzz after my first pipe. Got some weird looks from my wife.
