I've finally experienced my first morta smoke. It seems to act similarly to a meer right from the beginning.
What are the opinions of cake in a morta pipe?

I guess I'm old fashioned, I prefer a good VaPer in my pipe.

Victoria sponger works well.
Seriously though, minimal if any cake in a morta, too easy to crack.

Do you all normally use precarbonize bowl coating?

Like meerschaum, don't build it. Wipe bowl after each smoke.Smoke what you want, No ghosting it seems in Morta.Hope this answered your question?
Re: Question for the Mortaheads in here...
Thank you Chris. I thought it to be as fragile (if not more so) as meerschaum.
Nick... I wouldn't think it necessary, except when it is
With the one Ive decided to keep, there was a flaw in the wood that exits the bowl at the front/chin area, I did carbonize mine.
pipedreamer... thank you. I have only smoked about five bowls in it since completion, all the same mixture. I will keep it for this blend, it is Hearth and Home's Armada sweetened/rounded out with Scotty's butternut burley.

You may want to apply a little liquid glass and charcoal, works wonders!
Re: Question for the Mortaheads in here...
I have smoked more than 50 bowls in this pipe now, and absolutely no problems. In fact, it's the 'English' pipe I reach for the most.
On an unrelated pipe, I sold a morta billiard a short time back, and the customer burned it out on the first bowl. I've talked to both Nate and Steve Norse, they gave good advice and things to consider on future morta pipes. Also, make sure to inform the customer of the difference between a burl and a linear grained wood.
