Re: Who wants an order for 5-10 pipes?
You could offer to make her some basic Dublins or Billiards and have his likeness laser-cut into the faces of them. I can't imagine how she expects to get 5-10 miniature, hand-made sculptures by April's end.

Re: question on proportion.
Okay, I'm not sure if this is better or not stylistically :?: , but I think it's a better size. I'm not married to it, but the only other stem I have that might work is a really long churchwarden stem. The rest are either too small or too awkward. The other option is just to save the stummel until I...

Re: question on proportion.

Well, I'm still using pre-fab stems at this point. I'll look at my selection at hand and see if I can find something that fits better.
I'm traditionally far better at technical work than I am at aesthetic judgement. This is definitly a learning process.

Re: question on proportion.
That was fast! Thanks for that. I'll take a look at fitting another stem in the morning and see if I can come up with something better. As for the stem... I'm thinking maybe a nose warmer for #5?

question on proportion.
Right off the bat I'll say that I have searched around the forum before posting this, but wasn't able to find anything too helpful. If there is a thread that details some hard-and-fast rules about proportions in pipe-making, then I'd be grateful for a link to that thread. So, I'm on my 4th pipe now:...

Re: First Pipe
@ Literaryworkshop: Well, I've done some luthier work (guitars) but I'm not properly trained. What I'm having difficulty with is the small scale of the pipe. My collection of planes and spokeshaves do me little good here. I'm on my third pipe now, and I'm learning to cut back on my power sanding alr...

It almost looks as if the stem was glued into the olivewood?
As a rank beginner myself, I'm in awe of the overall results.

Re: First Pipe
Not bad for a start. On your next pipe, try to make your lines crisper and more defined, especially on the top of the bowl. Also try to make the lowest part of the bowl a little farther back, just under the rear half of the tobacco chamber, if that makes any sense. That makes sense, thanks. I've be...

First Pipe
Yep, it looks like crap, it's bland and boring, it gots a pre-fabbed stem, and what the hell's it made out of? But it's my first pipe and I felt like sharing. I'm not looking for any constructive criticism at the time, but it won't hurt my feelings if you feel like pointing out the hundred-an...

Re: Stem tightener?
Coating a tenon to enlarge it will never work on Delrin (for long), and depending on the pipe will eventually deteriorate on plastic and vulcanite. Some substances work better than others, and the solution is fine as a quick way to return a tobacco access device back to service, but a band-aid appr...

I can't see bandsaw marks on the backside of that pipe 'stand': http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-Age-Bogelu ... 256ef0c109
