Re: Smoking a Clay

...Sorry for the attack of too much information, I'm a historical archaeologist... Not at all, sir, you can never give TOO much information in here! Great help, thanks! I love all those dazzling chemistry explanations though it takes me some dictionary storming. I'm simply proud of hanging a...

Re: Smoking a Clay

Hi, buddies. I've not smoked a clay but got very interested by your comments, although the coffee-babble leaves me baffled :P Just curious when you say "glazed" - does that mean glazed inside the bowl or outside, or both? The "earthy" quality also surpries me while at the same ti...

Reformed Meerschaum?

I haven't found a thread dealing with making meerschaum pipes on this forum. I'd be glad if I were the first to ask:) Here (http://www.tobacco-barn.com/s-165-carve-your-own-meerschaum-kits.aspx) the business claims its "reformed meerschuam" is significantly different from "pressed mee...

Re: How dry is dry enough?

Over this past week, I did more smoking and observing. I let the pipes rest for a week and switched to other blends which I think are a little drier. The sizzling disappeared. Luckily, I'm not a wet smoker, nor is my pipe. :) Lastly, with no defiance to you guys' kind suggestions, I don't think a pi...

Re: Popular Science Stem article

I've got a set of Popular Science "Home Handyman" books, there are a couple of articles on pipe making and repair. One of the great things about that time is how it's taken as given that everyone has a lathe. : ) Jack I guess it was assumed that many people had access to lathes at the fac...

Re: Stem shape for a large freehand?

I agree with Pipeguy that a military stem may look good. To better fit the stummel, I think the stem needs to be fatter than normal militaries and have a more drastic bulge at the thickest point, like a beefcakes's calf perhaps.

How dry is dry enough?

Thanks to the precious information from all helpful guys here, I learned the fundamental principles and tricks for a good airway, and made pipes that smoked perfectly easy and dry in summer time. However, as mid auntumn sets in, moisture is rearing its head. (Now in my location, it's around 50 degre...

Re: Button hole to big

This reminds me of another question I have had for some time - Don't the factories have easier ways to make perfectly smooth Y-shape airway at the slot, say, heat-extruding a stem like that. Do factories like Dunhill do it that way? Further, if the German rod manufacturers produce short pieces of ro...

Well, I will have to reserve the bulge as my own secret pet shape. Now the debate comes to straighten out. Condensation, temperature, steam, venturi... There seems to be so many factors of which none of us can consider and manage all. When you get your wacky experiments and ideas, make sure you thro...

Re: A Taller Billiard

For the slight inverted taper or bulge on the shank, I found several pics of pipes with a similar trait. In fact it is these pics that inspired my taste for this nuance, although my taste may be tasteless :? I'm not arguing about which is "better", just to say that the good old "stand...

...Make sure to keep that thing away from jet fuel...looks like you're getting close to taking flight. :D ... Yes, the question does sound a bit nerdy. however, I am considering making and selling pipes like a semi-pro in the future, therefore go to some lengths with airway engineering. You know ho...

A Taller Billiard

I don't have the toughness to carve a dozen billiards which look the same. Tinkered a little bit and made a chimney/billard. The deep bowl spoils my tongue :) On this one, I began to increasingly feel the challenge of looking after the details - sand scratches, polish, edges and lines. What's you op...

Re: My Little Briar Herd - Humor

My little Herd of Briar Blocks out grazing on my ole drawing board.. They look so peaceful and serene, I almost hate to cut 'em up and make pipes out of them. Apply your tools gently, sing a lullaby, and give them a final plumpy-woolly finish. After this is all done, make sure you put them back tog...

Re: Several Draft Hole Questions

Taken on the flip side, the Yashtylov method averts all of the issues you are trying to solve. Doesn't look too easy though! Yes, indeed. This morning when I was lingering in bed, I even fansied making all billiards, dublins, calabashes and non-calabashes to be composed of a hollowed mainbody and a...

Re: Several Draft Hole Questions

Thank you. I got several points clear: 1. The small edges in Q1 need to be smoothed somewhat. The only difference is how far you go at it, ie, dremel or sandpaper. 2. Try not to make an oval opening of the drafthole. Try to put bowl and draft on the same straight line or nearly straight line. 3. My ...

Several Draft Hole Questions

These questions have been baffling me for some time. The first one relates to something pretty commonly encountered when making a regular pipe and I wish I could get your advice before drilling my next block. The remaining two questions are about less "normal" shapes like calabash. I have ...

See, you didn't like the ornate lucite because it was not ornate enough. Huh . . .? The bakelite items on your blog are dazzlingly beautiful, and they out-ornate, IMO, the ornate lucite you eschewed. :D And they resemble some sorts of jewellry like agate, amber, etc. (not sure of those perpl...
