Re: Advice on Buying old Craftsman Combo Lathe...
That's the type of lathe that I have. As far as pipemaking, it's almost like it was designed for it, in concept. Some things you might consider are that it's old; really, really old. I've only had to replace the spindle bearings, and one of the iron clamps for the tailstock broke, so I've been prett...

Re: Facing tool circles
I touched the bit on the grinder, took much shallower cuts and slowed down my feed. It's already looking much better. Thanks again fellas!

Re: Facing tool circles
I don't mind some tool marks, but these are pretty distinct and vinyl record-like. If, like Rad, you hoped this helped, it did. Thanks againTyler wrote:Of course, like Rad, my stem have tool marks on the face, so what do I know?

Re: Facing tool circles
I'll keep taking cracks at it. I've tried a bit I ground myself as well as a bit I bought. I've also gone multiple passes. What would you recommend for feed rate, fast or sloooow? Thanks Tyler

Facing tool circles
I've gotten some relatively smooth stem faces, but most of the time my facing tool leaves little concentric circles on the face of the stock. I've tried different facing bit profiles and different angles of approach, as well as making sure my facing tool is centered. Is it possible this is a speed i...

Re: Mushroom Pipe
Wow. Did you slice each piece of the gills and glue them into place? Very cool pipe.
Re: Pipe #2
What are the little 'footprints' on the inside of the bowl? Did you reverse chuck the stummel? Just curious.

Re: Shank Cap
My wood lathe, and a cutoff tool - mostly. Sometimes a skew. This seems like a good candidate for a video. It's way simpler than it sounds. I'm trying to figure out how you're insetting both sides of such a thin piece without hitting the mandrel itself; or are you just sacrificing the mandrel as yo...
Re: Shank Cap
I understand how extensions work and all but I don't understand how these shank caps are executed and perfectly rounded. Please, if this question has already been answered than I apologize. You got most of your answers regarding the mounting of the end cap, but in terms of the above it's actually p...

Re: pipe in the hat trade?
Even on a metal lathe you won't get a perfectly square shoulder, nor should you attempt to. The radius on the shoulder there acts as a strain relief in the event that the pipe is dropped, and when the tenon/stem junction is under any sort of stress. A sharp, square shoulder will actually promote th...

Re: pipe in the hat trade?
or just rip off some dunhill shape and make it look like a cheap peterson. I have to try to make the stem/shank fit better, but I think this is my PITH pipe. I have some touching up to do tomorrow. I will post in the gallery when it is totally finished. http://i1137.photobucket.com/albums/n519/fuch...
