Re: Influence vs. originality
You have to know what's inside the box before you can think outside the box. I'm sure there are people out there who *could* circumvent the usual process, but I haven't seen it happen. Lots have tried, but I'm still waiting to see it.

Re: This forum is a scary place
Ernie has the west coast snobs, and I couldn't be happier. As the official delegate of West Coast Snobbery, I deign to offer a response in this den of mediocrity. Within some ill-defined parameters, I really don't mind people making pipes with different goals in mind. Sas's pipes fall within that d...

Overall, it's a fine pipe. I would really focus on making consistent, flowing lines. Note the abrupt angle on top of the shank near the bowl. Your button could be a bit taller as well.

So far so good. It's been a bit of a rat race (which is a bit ironic), but I'm enjoying it.LatakiaLover wrote: As for a jejune existence, I thought you were a full-time maker these days. Re: Inciteful question for Sparkle Markle's benefit
Thanks for the distraction from my jejune existence, George. Like so many things in the pipe world, I think this is preference. As far as workability goes, I find acrylic a little more challenging at the beginning of the making process (drilling, filing, funneling, etc.), but it sure does buff faste...

Since I have a degree in philosophy, I feel completely qualified to say this: you guys give me a headache. Well show us how it's done. I'm not sure that I can. Partly because... This kind of close-mindedness always leaves me frustrated and bored. and partly because I don't want to read these 7 page...

Re: Art or Craft?
Pieces of art that hang on my walls serve a practical use. They bring color and energy to a room, break up the empty spaces on the walls, and can define a room's purpose. They engage the senses, remind me of the story surrounding them, and enrich my life through their presence. These purposes are p...

Re: Teipen Ryukin
Yep. It's the whole reason I put the alignment dots on it. The shank is asymmetrical and plays tricks with your eyes when aligning the stem. It's also why I stamped it to the side. If I stamped it centered on the centerline like the dots it would look weird. If I stamped it on what appears to be ce...

Dear Tyler, I'm Bored.
Can you please ask one of your argument-spawning questions so we can fight about it? I'm not seeing much on the forum, atm. Perhaps you could post those naked pics of Sas again? Could you maybe recruit someone to tell us about how their efforts at integrating Campbell's Soup cans in the pipe making ...

Re: My first briar pipe!
Wayne- are you suggesting a down ward bend for aesthetic or functional purposes? If the former, I'm guessing it would be to make an S-curve? I thought it might be beneficial to be able to see more of the bowl when it is being lit. The S curve is both functional and aesthetic. It will allow you to c...

Sometimes the outer half inch or so of the briar will absorb quite a bit more stain as well.

Well, we are hilarious. You make a great pipe, and you've got a nice, classic aesthetic. This just happens to be something outside of your sandbox and smack dab in the middle of Bill's.Ocelot55 wrote:Yeah, yeah. Laugh it up you two....Tyler wrote:OK. That's funny.e Markle wrote:

So where's your "then and now," hmm? My first is posted on this forum; see below. Try not to cry at the beauty. It's a bit like the Grand Canyon: more than the eye can take in at once. http://images5a.snapfish.com/232323232%7Ffp63243%3Enu%3D523%3A%3E679%3E25%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D326959%3A%3B9534...

There exist, right now some of the best I have ever seen! I know there is a rise in sheer numbers, But time will weed out the dilettantes. Sadly, 95%+ are dilettantes. Still even after the attrition of wanna be pipe carvers, there is the fact that we live in probably the best times ever for pipe ca...
