Re: Best sharpening method

Here how I do it, I leave the chisels sitting out at night with a glass of Whiskey and a slice of cake and in the morning they are razor sharp thanks to the leprechauns. Although the little buggers have been known to nick the odd tool now and again.

Re: Bowl coating as a filler

The bowl coating is water soluble so no good as a filler. The two main options I use are a mix of slow setting CA and gold dust or a good quality two part wood filler.

Re: Sand pits

I'd send the briar back. I've talked to a couple of suppliers about worms and they both say that anything with holes in should be destroyed, they would never ship it in the first place though........ If they are still active then they can spread, our old house had woodworm that spread to the furnitu...

Re: Source for Horn stems?

I have a few dozen from the thirties which are on the narrow side, there's a mix of round taper and diamond taper with a selection of ali tennons. Great for group one or two but to fine for anything much bigger-oh and they are all straight. If you want to start from scratch try the tips from longhor...

Re: Wiggly stems....

Possible answers. The briar was not fully dried when you carved the pipe and it dried out making the mortice larger. You did the fix. As he smoked the pipe the briar adsorbed moisture and expanded, thereby the stem got sticky, he applied graphite/pencil lead as a dry lubricant, the briar continued t...

Re: meerschaum insert question

Only if they are cheap no names from Germany.

I have an old well smoked Dublin from around 1900 that is solid asbestos, it has never been reamed or worked on and it will never be smoked by me.

Re: A Pipe Photography Tip

Where you have pulled back and changed angle, you can see more of the area for marking in one shot for example, it has changed the lighting which your camera reads differently and changes the aperture (f) and exposure giving a different effect. Using a hard shiny surface as the background will cause...

Re: meerschaum insert question

The method varies according to the type of pipe you are making, a traditional gourd calabash or wooden equivalents can have removable bowls whilst billiards etc tend to be glued in. Epoxy and water based glues should not be used as they either soften or dissolve, my normal is old fashioned melt in t...

Re: Sourcing Tools in the UK

Convert your own spade bits, and hit ebay for most other bits. Car boot sales can be a good source for used quality tools like rasps, files etc. Buy the best you can afford. For briar, rod, stems et al. http://www.briarblocks.com/pipes/index.htm site is being rebuilt at the moment and is bit slow. h...
