Sidecar lens calabash....Updated with Close-up shots
So, how's this for a calabash system? The smoke travels into the lens barrel sidecar, and the lens focuses on the swirling smoke. The lenses can be removed for cleaning. The stummel is made from padauk, with an african blackwood bowl insert. cannary wood is used for the bowl ring accent, and the ste...

Re: metal lathe cutters
I rough out as best I can with the metal cutters. Then I put a piece of square steel in the cutter holder and set it up like a rest for using hand tools. I like the freedom I get with hand tools. I would say that both leave an equally nice finish. Make sure to ramp up the speed of your lathe to maxi...

Re: A panorama of my workshop.
Haha, well...
Outside of this shop I have a blasting cabinet, glass blowing equipment, kiln, belt sander, grinder, various other..things...
But I'm trying to limit my BIG tools, since I plan on possibly making this shop portable in the near future. This is rather a temporary solution for winter.

Re: Showing off my new Logan lathe! (updated with before shots)
I removed the entire apron/cross slide assembly from the bed before disassembling anything, this made it much easier to maneuver and take apart. I'm kind of lost as to where you are, perhaps the design of our lathes is slightly different. I didn't encounter any strange problems, it was all pretty st...

Re: Showing off my new Logan lathe! (updated with before shots)
Pm's welcomed, but why not keep it in this thread so others can read it for all eternity? Either way. I didn't have to replace anything thankfully. The guy I bough it from used it periodically for the past 4 years, and he said he got it from some basement somewhere... so I don't think it's had a lot...

Re: Showing off my new Logan lathe!
Very beautiful, it's a pleasure to see one cleaned up like that, It looks better then new. I have the same lathe in considerably rougher condition. How did you get the ways, cranks etc. so clean? -Palmer Thanks! The cranks I just used some abrasive pads and a powered rotary wire brush. I liked the ...

Re: What brand is your lathe
One thing to consider is the space you have around the chuck for maneuvering your tools. The Grizzly lathe looks cramped, the chuck sits deep beyond the front face of the head stock, which has those sharp corners sticking out pretty far. And hopefully you can remove the splash guard on the back. Jus...

Showing off my new Logan lathe! (updated with before shots)
So I just spent the entire week restoring this Logan 821. Here's the result! I'm really happy with how it turned out, can't wait to start making some pipes with it. The colour scheme was inspired by the planet Tatooine from Star Wars, because I'm a huge nerd. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7139/77322...
