Re: In defense of bowl coating

I'm no fan of sodium silicate (and don't use it) but I absolutely love my bowl coating. It's the prettiest coating I've come across (not to brag) and I know from experience that it tastes basically like nothing. why? what is the controversy? I haven't heard about it.... in europe MANY established m...

Re: In defense of bowl coating

Let me make a disclaimer. I don't like the taste of raw briar, and I think I will always remain sceptical of those who say that a pipe with no bowl coating eventually tastes better than a pipe with one :) Not that I don't believe that for you or your pipes, but I've had the opposite experiences with...

In defense of bowl coating

A defense of bowl coatings: I drank too much coffee this morning, so I got all excited and wrote this. Please discuss! :fencing: 1. Aesthetics. The pipe looks complete (when done properly), it looks clean, and more importantly it looks inviting. If the bowl is uncoated, one may be trepidatious abou...

Re: sodium silicate

I've sold at least two pipes due to the lack of sodium silicate in my bowl coating. At the time, they were actually quite important for us, so yeah, american collectors don't like waterglass :)

Re: A couple stem questions

I've heard several people repeat Todd Johnson's advice of making the thickness behind the button less than 0.15" is the only way (not disagreeing, and it IS very comfortable), but most of the makers on that chart are at 0.16". The vast, vast majority. That's the way Jeff Gracik taught me, ...

Here it is: they're really nice. A few things, though, to take them from nice to I-want-to-buy-them nice. The saddle might look better if it was domed like the bit, so the lines from the bit to the saddle are more thin. like-a dis (http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/lars/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=9...

Re: will fiebings have a both at west coast show?

Actually, Tandy's here in CA don't carry any alcohol based stains anymore. Fiebings makes a special "solvent-based" leather dye that's very comparable, only for market here in CA. Which tandy's sells. Its quite decent. Here's the link http://www.fiebing.com/catalogue/dyes/?product=178

Re: bamboo

I'd like to get in on this for $100 + shipping's worth of white bamboo, but I'd also like to see how this plays out in terms of mindong's response.

nice pictures :D

I think if you included the full reflections on the upside down pictures, you could get both views into one picture, thereby saving electricity, space, and ultimately, the world.

Re: Slack Belt Sander SFPM?

I use 1x72 belts, using the lowest setting on the pulley (motor and pulley from a drill press). I have cloth backed 240 grit, and its super gentle. I like the disc sander too much for general shaping, just using the slack sander for real fine tuning. I've never had an issue with my fingers whatsoeve...

I got a stamp from buckeye engraving after shopping around. It works pretty well, and was definitely the best price i could find.
There was a miscommunication with timing and customer relations, so don't be afraid to call them throughout the process and confirm things.

It looks pretty good. I'd give it a second look if it were on your table at a show. Warning: constructive criticism to follow. I'm saying these things to you because it looks like you have a firm grasp on the fundamentals of shaping, and need that extra push to make it "right". Making thes...

Re: Danish Influence?

I think for most people on this forum, Danish, English and Italian are fairly well understood schools. Obviously, there's loads of variations and deviations from themes. The heavy Italian heel, the efficiency of the English (which actually is quite hard to mimic and most handmade carvers do not or c...
