First go with Bamboo

Post by JSPipes »

I made myself a pipe today (started yesterday). This month marks 1 year making pipes. For comparison, here's the first one I ever made. http://www.jspipes.com/pipes/pipe1.jpg

On my latest, the lucite on either side of the bamboo was scrap and the cumberland stem was the end of a rod. So I was able to use up the ends of some materials. The briar is Algerian. The shape was not an attempt to copy anything. I started and just let it happen.

Smoking it now filled with 5yo GLP Barbary Coast. It's really nice! Here's a link. http://www.jspipes.com/pipes/0612/0612Composite.jpg

Very nice pipe Joel! I love the front and back birdseye, and beautiful cross grain on the sides, and I love the transition you made in the shape to take advantage of the grain transition from birdseye to the straight grain on the bottom. To my eye your shape took very good advantage of the grain in this block. I like the lucite on either side of the bamboo too, as well as the stem.

Your progress certainly gives me hope of what I may be capable of in a year or so if I remain deligent. Enjoyed seeing some of the other work on your site, and your pipe making pictures are also a help.

Tonight I'm smoking GLP Odyssey in the first pipe I made (I've made 4 now). I really like this little pipe. Very small and light, and while full of problems, of which I see more every day, it is for whatever reason a very good smoker. Nothing like smoking ones own creation.

Thanks for the hope my friend!

Nice, you definately have progressed nicely over a years time. Although, I must say for a first pipe that wasn't bad at all.

Great work!
