Shellac Source

Post by hazmat »

Anybody have any experience with this distributor?

http://www.shellac.net/

EDIT:
Just a quick note.. I found this on a click-through on shellac.net. Apparently they're no longer in business? It's in the very first paragraph on this page:

Thanks, Dan. Woodcraft was the first place I looked and found shellac.net on a google search while checking prices.

There's a Woodcraft here in town, so I think I'm going to go pick some up this weekend to play with. I just finished a pretty nice rusticated poker(pics to come soon) I want to make all pretty and shiny for its owner but I'm NOT waxing it. Last time I did that I lost the year I was 30 trying to get the wax out of the nooks and crannies!

I'm assuming you're using the blonde?

Haz,
Yes, mostly the blond, but I keep all three around, orange is my second choice.

I see that Dan's got you pointed int he right direction. If you can swing it, pick up all the colors. The garnet color is very useful for bringing out grain in an otherwise unstained pipe, and it can add a really nice ruddy glow to other stains.

I walk in there every two weeks with laundry list of stuff I want - which I then have to whittle down to what I absolutely need. It's a painful process. I swear, if I ever win a lottery, I'm going to purchase a Woodcraft franchise.

Kurt,
I know that feeling well. I don't know about your store, but mine has started to stock a nice selection of 1x1 spindle blanks, the olive wood is especially nice but alot of other species in there as well. The last time I was in I went in for one thing....a block of carnuba, spent a hour spending money in my head. I was good....I left with the bar of wax! So I know of what you speak.
Dan
Gabrieli Pipes.....yes I too have thought of owning one! LOL !

The one near me just started carrying lutherie supplies - which had me spending hundreds of unearned dollars in my head. Never mind the really nice sharpener I saw - it was a Delta make, and was a slow-speed grinder/sharpener similar to a Tormek. I can't find it on Delta's site, but I recall thinking it was an incredible bargain at the price - which was $160 I think.

I, however, did walk out with some Olive 1x1x6-ish olive blanks and a big chunk of osage orange. I was tempted by other things as well, but managed to pass them by. :)

I do wish they'd carry abralon pads. They have Abranet, but it's not the same.

Kurt,
You have mentioned Abralon in quite a few posts. I still use conventional paper and micro-mesh. I've been meaning to try both Abralon and net.
The only place I've seen them both is :http://www.pennstateind.com/

So you say the pads are better, I'll have to consider them in the near future.
By the way, that Osage is pretty stuff!
