hi all

there is a tool maker who will make custom chucks for your lathe for pipe makng.

and also will grind tobacco chamber drill bits

trent does not charge alot for his services and he does very good work

he has made me a chuck for my jet bd-920 and several tobacco chamber bits.

i know john crosby and others have had tobacco chamber bits made for them

For those going to be there, Trent is usually at the chicago show with drill bits and other tooling.

I visited his shop on the way back from the Kansas City show and he has a great set up to do anything with metal. He listens to what you need lets you know what he has or what he can make for you.

While I was there he showed me a drill bit that a customer returned that "wouldn't drill" and it worked just fine. What he found out was that the customer's equpiment was not working properly - alignment issues. That customer has since "upgraded" from his home made rig and bought Jet equipment.

Suggestion - if you have a problem with anyone's tooling, please contact them and let them know - the problem won't get fixed on a forum.

Silver and demming bits

I saw another tooling maker who suggests that lesser quality "foreign" steel is used to make the bits. Mine are Silver and Demming, not Silver and Demming "style" bits. And the last time I checked, the Swedes and Germans were making really good steel

Heh. I saw that too and thought the exact same thing. I was mildly amused by it.

The Japanese also have some excellent steels in production - especially in the tool steel and particle metallurgy worlds.
