A Padawan's first pipe

Post by SimeonTurner »

A friend of mine recently moved home to Colorado from San Francisco, and one of the first things he wanted to do was to join me in the shop to learn how to make a pipe. As many of you know, teaching a complete newbie how to make a pipe in a one on one setting can be a lot of fun, and this was definitely no exception. :)

Other than helping him layout the drilling lines, performing the actual drilling, and a bit of the finish sanding and staining, he did all of the work on this one. The stain turned out pretty awesome, I thought, and his shaping was pretty darn good for a very first effort, so I thought I'd share some pics that he took of the pipe for everyone to see/critique.

Looks pretty good for a first pipe, but it's hard to see some of the detail against the black background. Perhaps a lighter background in future?

Frank.

agree. Hard to tell how the lines flow on the pipe, but it seems the finishing is spot on.

Also, can't get a good visualization of the size. Is the bowl oversize, or the stem undersized? Both?

Can't really comment on the pictures, as he took them on his own. I kinda like
the dark background, but I have seen the pipe in person, so I can probably visualize it better.

The stem is a tiny saddle stem. The bowl is definitely large.
