It hardly takes any time at all. Just heat your oven to 400, put the flakes into a muffin tin, place it in the oven and after cooling you have a dozen bars of carnauba.flix wrote:The price is great here, unfortunately, in flake form. Dark brown, but the solution is clear and light brown once it's cut. I don't really use it for pipes, but I did used to use it for furniture. Several coats makes for a very cool looking finish, and it's something you can't really achieve with a light coat of stain and then blonde shellac over it. You were around when the record was invented, Rad. Didn't you know they were made of bug poo?RadDavis wrote:Aren't they like, ......black?ToddJohnson wrote:Tano wrote:Looking for a quality shellac flake?

You don't know my wife. She'd like to kill me if I used her muffin tin. Sheesh, don't go there....jeff wrote:It hardly takes any time at all. Buy your own muffin tin, like I did, and give her shit if she uses it.

Grab one of those flexible silicone muffin pans. They're awesome for that kind of stuff.
Re: Zinsser Spray Shellac
You can "buy" muffin tins?! I thought they were extinct, except the ones that get inherited!
Re: Zinsser Spray Shellac
Better yet, buy a new muffin tin for your wife and use her old one for your wax. Double points. (I'll bet I've been married longer than Tano).Tano wrote:Buy your own muffin tin, like I did, and give her shit if she uses it.

Dunno Fred.... if I took away my wife's 200 year old beater tins and replaced them with some newfangled anti-stick things, I think I'd wind up with a 6-cup imprint on my forehead.
How much Carnauba do you guys need? I bought a tiny puck 50 pipes ago and still haven't used 2 or the four pieces, and the other 2 are still fine. Like, Zoinks, Scoob, maybe I'm not using my quota....

You aren't eating a healthy bite of wax with each pipe you make? I thought that was a requisite offering to the pipe gods that had to be made if you wanted your pipe to work right.Sasquatch wrote:Dunno Fred.... if I took away my wife's 200 year old beater tins and replaced them with some newfangled anti-stick things, I think I'd wind up with a 6-cup imprint on my forehead.

If that's not true, I'm going to be so mad at Jeff. He told me to do that, and I've been crapping carnuba ever since. That guy's a real jerk!

Re: Zinsser Spray Shellac
I'm looking to try some shellac on the cheap (student loans suck) for some refinishing experiments I'm doing on old estates. Could I pic up a couple of records and dissolve them in alcohol? I've got some 90% iso, will that work to cut shellac or dissolve records? What about Zinsser brush on clear shellac, will it work? Or is it just worth it to get a little from that Canadian site posted earlier?

Re: Zinsser Spray Shellac
Honestly, the best way to do this on a budget is to simply go to the local hardware store, pick up a small half-pint can of Zinsser blond shellac, which will run you about six dollars. Pour half in a recycled (clean) jelly/pickle/salsa jar and thin it with denatured alcohol - a small can of which will also run about six dollars. There is *nothing* wrong with doing it this way, and is is simply the easiest and least complicated method to the whole ordeal. This will also leave you with half a can of "full strength" shellac should you want that as well.Thomas Tkach wrote:I'm looking to try some shellac on the cheap (student loans suck) for some refinishing experiments I'm doing on old estates. There's no need to complicate things further than that. The no reason to use shellac flakes and worry about cuts, colors, and tinting while you're still trying to learn how to simply make a nice looking pipe.
Re: Zinsser Spray Shellac
Probably not, you want denatured alcohol, which is 96% ethanol with some methanol added to kill you if you drink it. Gotta love prohibition-era rules for industrial alcohol...Thomas Tkach wrote: I've got some 90% iso, will that work to cut shellac or dissolve records?
I like to just get a bottle of Everclear or similar PGA, it's still 96% ethyl acohol and you can use it as a drink mixer if you're brave...It's more expensive than the can o' denatured you'll find on the shelf near the bullseye shellac at the hardware store, though.

Re: Zinsser Spray Shellac
I tried the spray this weekend just for ease of aquiring. Instead of spraying it directly on the pipe, I sprayed it on a cloth, wiped it on & quickly wiped it off. It seemed to work fairly well.
I use old 8 tracks otherwise.

Re: Zinsser Spray Shellac
I'm not convinced by the spray at all... the additives (propane etc) seem to leave it a little sticky for a very long time.
I'm gonna be sticking to flakes and meth for pipes.
PS shellac hasn't been used to make a record for like 100 years, right??

Yeah, I didn't see anyone at the Chicago show selling meth pipes, though, so you should have that whole market cornered!KurtHuhn wrote:That should make for some interesting pipes! I hear it's hell on your teeth and skin though.Sasquatch wrote: I'm gonna be sticking to flakes and meth for pipes.
