In two videos, pipas sigmund and the blakemar video, they are using a convex sanding disk. In the first video it shows him putting a piece of sand paper on the disk. In the second video you can see the edges and it also looks like a standard piece of sand paper has been fitted to it. Does anyone know where these are available and what they age called?
Thanks, Sam

Re: convex sanding disk
They are fairly old tools, the version I have seen had a solid rubber face over which you fit your paper, the edges are then folded over and held in place by a metal cone which tightened by a thread on the mandrel. A modern version can be found at Woodcraft if you are in the US of A.

They're called French Wheels. I think you can get them from Tim West.

Re: convex sanding disk
French wheels are nice, but having a number of varied wheels make life easy.
I have found that a backing plate, felt backing and applied sandpaper the way to go, outside of a 36 grit wheel (for shaping).
You can make these by going to your local Lowe's or Home Depot.
I have found that much of the fun of pipe making is creating the tools needed to make pipes quicker and better.

Thanks for all the great feed back. It has been a few days since I have been able to check. I agree that it is more fun to customize your own tools whenever possible. Think I will give it try. Cheers..... Sam
