A Lovat and a Billiard

Post by DaGamba »

Here's two more pipes I finished recently. I would really like your opinion on how my shaping of these classic shapes is coming along.

The Lovat I mainly made to see if I was able to drill such a long stem. The draft hole came out a bit to the side but not as bad as I was afraid it would.(My drill press, I have realized, is not drilling true and straight).

The Billiard I made cause I like Billiards and I think it's a good shape to practise making. The block had some really nice grain that unfortunately got a bit obscured when shaping. And the shank is a bit short.
This block also had a funny smell when working with it. Really sweet, not very pleasant. The closest smell I could think of would be fertilizer or something close to manure. Anyone have a clue to what could cause that? And my guess is that it probably doesn't taste that good...

Well, here goes:

Hey DaGamba,
i like both of this pipes with a stronger tendency to the long Lovat. You shaped it meticulously in a precise manner with a intense finish!

The Billiard has indeed a grain that merges into the classical appearance beautifully .The stem seems very long but on this overall appearance it looks as it should, by my little book of pipe carving  !

Nice job. I love lovats and it seems like so few pipe carvers today give them the attention they deserve. These are both really well balanced, proportion and shape wise and I really like the stem work on both of these (seem like they would be good clenchers). The rustication on the lovat is very subtle and you can still see some of the grain (which I like). The grain on the billiard is beautiful and I think you really took advantage of it, aesthetically, and made an already beautiful block even nicer. Great classic work!

Really nice work! Personally, the stem on the billiard could have been 10mm or so shorter. But that's just me.
