12 and 13th pipe

Post by cmueller »

These two are my newest pipes I have made and my last ones until September. I am moving back to NY and need to pack up my work shop. Let me know what you think and thanks for any feedback. The band is made from brass tubing I got from a hobby store.

You're definately showing improvement. The band is a nice touch. Did you add some sort of pre-carb to the bowl?

There are some things you can improve on (I think that applies to everybody), but ar this stage in your pipemaking career I think these are quite good.

My number 12 and 13 are aweful (that was before I discovered the forum).

Keep up the good work.

Very nice for 12 and 13. The only thing that I think (and this is likely a personal preference) could be improved on 12 is if the heel rounded off more to improve the flow. The lovat looks pretty good. The only two things I see that could be improved is the shank appears to have a slight reverse taper and the stem is a touch too long after the saddle.

Nice work.

Oh, and the stem on the lovat doesn't need a bend.

I don't think I can really add anything at this point for you except try to get in a couple pipes before Sept rolls around. When you are starting out your skills can have a tendency to atrophy more quickly. Even if you have to buy one that is pre drilled, that will be better than starting from a standstill in the fall.

Very nice! What are your ratios for your pre-carb mix?

generally, i just guess. I know that there are different recipes but generally I add confectioners' sugar and water until I like the consistency (like cream soup), then the carbon that has been crushed to a fine powder by use of a coffee been grinder.

Great. Thank you. What are you using for your carbon that you need to grind it?

I use high grade aquarium carbon because I had it handy. I will be buying powder when I run out of what i have already. The grinder works well but it will only crush the carbon so fine.
