Church warden stem on straight bowl or bent??

Post by dewty »

Hi everyone,
I was wondering which would look better with a church warden stem a stragiht bowl or a bent... Also I was wondering what size I should drill the mortis for the shanck that I am going to get. it is the only one on the pimo sight. It is in the round stem section and it is the only one they have... I would really appreciate the help from anyone that would be willing thanks.

I like 'em with a slight bend. It just seems more graceful. Additionally, I do my mortise drilling at 9/32. No particular reason. Thats what Mark Tinsky's sight said he had the tenons turned to when I bought a few stems, so thats what I went with.

The tenons on my churchwarden stems are 1/4" - that gives plenty of room for wiggle as needed.

Also, there's no hard and fast rule for bent vs straight. Sometimes the shank is straight, but the stem is bent - it all depends on the overall aesthetic of the pipe.
