Pipe #15- The Oris
Here she be, I was a little disappointed by the grain, but hey- it'll still smoke beautifully.
This is the first piece I've finished in under a week. I guess that's special.

"but rev, isn't smoking a sin?"
well I suppose if one were to smoke to excess it would be a sin
"but what would be smoking to excess?"
Why smoking two pipes at once of course

Very nice stem work. I have a problem with stain in the bowl. But that's just me.

Good observation. However, I have a feeling that the goal was to stain the angle leading down to the actual chamber. I think it looks good.LexKY_Pipe wrote:Very nice stem work. I have a problem with stain in the bowl. But that's just me.
Overall, I think the pipe is really nice. Congratulations on finishing one in a week. I'm aiming to get there myself, but boy it's a challenge. I think you're doing some really nice work. If there's anything to critique technically, it's certainly for the pros 'cause I'm not seeing a whole lot. I'm not a huge fan of the shape, but that's just me. I'd prefer to see the back and front of the bowl pulled in a bit to give more flow to the bowl and, while I think you did a really nice job on the taper in the stem, I might suggest getting thinner faster. However, all of that is really personal preference and I think some of my stems get thin a little too fast, so I'm one to talk.
Nice work. Keep it up!

Disappointed with the grain?
I think it looks really good, both the shape and the grain! Good job!
(but that might be me not knowing good grain , my wood was pretty cheap since it was the first batch I bought for practice )
As for finishing in a week, I find it hard to beat since the staining and re-staining process takes quite some time for me even if the amount of work in a day is very little. I've tried to work with several pieces to reduce the finishing time period for each pipe so to speak=)
Best regards, Jon

The grain placement looks nice, especially on the shank. Is it the light or are there some flaws on the right side of the bowl in the first picture? I can't place it but something about the top of the bowl isn't marrying up with the rest of the pipe for me. I am a certified idiot though so it's probably just me.

Yeah, there were a fair number of flaws on this pipe.
