And and all critique would be appreciated
this one a tried to mimic an eltang shape
and this one just seemed to come out as I carved it. The man I was making it for wanted a rugged, big, thick walled pipe. The grain is really nice and shows up better in real life.
thanks fellas

well I suppose if one were to smoke to excess it would be a sin

Why smoking two pipes at once of course

Not bad rev, although the stem on the first one is overbent.

is there a rule of thumb?

Ditto
"Usually" - you don't want the bit to be bent past the plane of the top of the bowl. Underbent is preferred to overbent.
The dublin could have had a bit more taken off the diameter of the shank as it approaches the bowl. Also - something not right about that stem. It "appears" wavy. Could use better polishing, too.

Re: #15 and #16 Bent brandy and Plateaux dublin
The first one, I really like. As others have pointed out, the stem should be bent no more than parallel to the top of the bowl. I really like that the top of the bowl has a slight chamfer.
The point where the shank meets the bowl looks a little sharp, creased, on both pipes. I find that a Dremel #194 bit has just the right radius for my tastes to carve out this transition. https://www.dremel.com/en-us/Accessorie ... px?pid=194
From the top view, I would prefer not to see the stem taper at all, or at least not anywhere near what it is here, and definately not flared back out before the button. Also, from the top view, it looks like you might have hit the back edge of the bowl a little abruptly with the compound wheel, leaving a bright line along the back edge of the rim.
Overall though, I like the first one... If I were in the position to buy pipes right now, I'd buy it!
The second pipe just seems off. It's quite out of balance to me. The first thing that would have to go would be the stem. It doesn't look like it belongs with this pipe. The size and style both just don't fit. (Also, the bend is a little wonky... not very smooth)
The shank seems a bit too cumbersome in relation to the bowl and overall balance, and it seems that some stain has leached down through the plateau into the top of the tobacco chamber and should be sanded out.
Having said all that, I'm pretty sure that I once made and sold a pipe that looked almost exactly like this one.
Of course, my usual disclaimer when critiquing pipes: "There is a buyer for every pipe!"
Everyone has different tastes, and there are pipe buyers out there who will find that one of these is the most perfect pipe they have ever seen!

Re: #15 and #16 Bent brandy and Plateaux dublin
thanks so much Walt, I am going to put a different stem on the freehand. Instructions from the client were they wanted a big, chunky pipe, I may have gotten a bit too much so on the shank
I appreciate all the help guys, my next pipe will benefit greatly from it

Hey, like I said, to your client this might be the perfect pipe, and that's all that really matters in the end...the rev wrote:Instructions from the client were they wanted a big, chunky pipe, I may have gotten a bit too much so on the shank
That's my two cents FWIW... (Note: Comments have no cash value )
