Blowfish 2
Blowfish 2
I finished this pipe yesterday. This is the first pipe that I've buffed with my motor and Beal buffs instead of using my girlfriend's hand drill, so there was a bit of a learning curve there which accounts for most of the mistakes. Oh well. On to the next!

Re: Blowfish 2
Art Deco comes to mind.
The grain is really interesting, the finish looks pretty snazzy. I think I have issue with the stem and shank size versus the art deco side. Maybe trim things up a bit proportion-wise, idk.
I wanna see blowfish 3 now!

I agree about the shank. I took a lot of enormous risks with this pipe, including trying to avoid hand sanding and just sanding up to a high grit on the disk. It worked for the most part, but I didn't figure out that I needed to move to low speeds on the higher grit disks until the shank was already approaching itty bitty. The composition works... in its own way, but on the next one I'll definitely be trying to keep more meat on the shank to help with the balance overall.
Thanks for the feedback!

Yeah, my first attempts at skipping hand sanding ended in a couple pencil-shank brandyglasses.

Man, you're getting all fancy with YouTube videos? I gotta step up my game
I get the image of a blowfish sucking on a monster jawbreaker...you know, when you try to put it in your cheek so you can talk?
While this pipe totally isn't my style, I think you did a great job making it. You're really making great progress in your pipe making. Once you get that buffing system figured out, you're going to love it compared to your drill.
Brian.

Re: Blowfish 2
I just recently started buffing using that system on my slow speed grinder motor... the results are stunning.
Re: Blowfish 2
David,
That's a fine looking, albeit a bit non-traditional, blowfish. I personally like the shaping of "traditional" blowfish (if it can even be considered such) a bit better aesthetically, but you did an excellent job following the grain. Polish looks great and stemwork looks excellent.
You seem to be producing them a lot faster too, which is nice, because one David Huber pipe once every six months is just not enough!

LMAO! I hope there are many who agree with you, 'cause I am getting faster. Vroom vroom!Ocelot55 wrote:You seem to be producing them a lot faster too, which is nice, because one David Huber pipe once every six months is just not enough!

Lol! Not sure I'd call those videos "fancy" but they certainly are functional. If you ever want a quick walk through of how to do it, let me know. Assembling them is really about the simplest thing imaginable.Growley wrote:Man, you're getting all fancy with YouTube videos? I gotta step up my game

Thanks a lot for the kind words, Brian!

My favorite part of buffing right now is the final dry buff at low speed. All of a sudden, the stem just goes to an ocean of the purest black. Just stunning stuff. The Smoking Yeti wrote:I just recently started buffing using that system on my slow speed grinder motor... the results are stunning.
