running pipe update
running pipe update
Hello all,in a previous post I mentioned the idea of a running pipe to benefit the forum
That has been nothing but a tremendous help to all of us. I was a little disappointed with the
The participation end of it,however things are what they are and we must take care of things and commitments first.
We have however fielded a team and we are going for it.Steve Norse has graciously offered some materials for this endeavor. Participants we must decide on a shape.I'm thinking the basics for the first.Drill first shape later.
Billiard, dublin, bulldog, and of course my favorite the brandy. I have a a tentative line up set based on conversations with some of you. What do you think?

Re: running pipe update
If Steve hasn't mailed my rods yet he could put the block in with my package and I could drill it.

Re: running pipe update
the tube heading to Sas may not be adequate to fit a block into, and we'll want it shaped before the drilling. If we wanted to pick a shape, I can make the initial cuts on the bandsaw to make sure we're into some good wood, then send it with a piece of rod to the next guy. I like the idea of a basic/traditional shape, they sell easier.

Re: running pipe update
I think we need to take pictures as each of us does our work on the pipe. Then we should make a little photo album to go with the pipe. In progress shots are always cool

Im very interested in participating. but I also understand if the idea is to go with pipemakers more established than myself.
Re: running pipe update
Well so far I'm drilling, shaping, doing the stem, blasting and staining. Anyone want to do the carnauba?

Re: running pipe update
Wait?! I have to make the full Youtube Video? eegads!!! I'm not sure I want to actually edit a full piece.
Also, are we sure we want to drill first? We'll honestly have more freedom to adjust shape if we shape first- it might be the better option for a collaborative work like this.

Re: running pipe update
Fuck off Micah, if it comes here first it's gettin' drilled, cuz that's how you make a proper pipe.

Also, what shape is it to be? It feels like this whole operation would be best organized at the Chicago pipe show? Are all the participants going to attend?

Re: running pipe update
I do suggest that Jesse and I switch places. We need to send him a pipe that is ready for final sanding. I would probably wreck his work on the shank if I get it after he has refined the stummel. I shape the shank and stem at the same time. I really don't ever shape one without the other. And I have a feeling this is going to have a smooth transition from shank to stem if we are doing a traditional shape.

Re: running pipe update
There's actually going to be 2 pipes here from what I can gather. That will hedge our bets against a devestating flaw, and possibly produce two cool pipes. So whatever Steve marks out on the one will be great, and I'll add another shape and another block into the mix here. I'm thinking straight billiard and bent bulldog, but it depends on what Steve sends me.
