A general rule in pipe restoration and cleaning is to use pure (99% ethyl or isopropyl), unflavored alcohol.
I have no idea why would anyone want to make their pipe taste like rum or whiskey or anything different than tobacco. Just drink the rum on the side if you want to taste it
Using anything with a lesser alcohol content means that your introducing water into the wood (which will mostly dry out of course, but why do that at all). Pure alcohol also has the best cleaning properties (unless you want to sanitize the mouthpiece, then 75% alcohol is better, there are chimical/biological reasons for that, it should still be unflavored alcohol though).
Is this safe for burl?
Re: Is this safe for burl?
I think your all over thinking this, find a good alcohol, and clean it, keep it off the finish and the outside of ebonite/vulcanite stems, even if you used Jack Daniels the flavor isn't going to last long

I'm with bigcasino I used 100 proof rum for a bit. Until I made it to the Lq store and picked up everclear I use it in the shank&stem most smokes

Overproof Rum makes a hell of a good Rum punch. Was stationed in Cuba and that was found at all get togethers. I guess I will stick to everclear rather than using overproof though .
