Bamboo Apple

Post by Alden »

I started this quite awhile back, worked on it off and on, and just finished it up.
I still need to get a feel for laying out the bamboo and options for stem work on them.
I like it a lot, I would personally smoke the heck out of this pipe if I didn't need the cash.
5.40" long

I came here to make pipes and chew bubble gum, and I'm all out of bubble gum.
You should just about be out of briar the way you been spitting them out lately...LOL

I like the way you made the transition from the bamboo to the stem, I like the shape of the bowl too, It seems to dip below the bottom of them shank a touch tho , or could it be something with the angle?

all in all I like it

I think a lot of guys will put the bamboo 90° rotated from what you have so the profile view looks like the shank is straighter. The way it is, the middle of the bamboo looks a little high and the spacing between the knuckles and the bowl and the stem looks a little off. The bowl does come down a bit far for my taste.

It looks like the bamboo on the bowl side either got sanded or sandblasted. And it's hard to see, but it doesn't look like you cut a valley for the stem on the bottom by the bamboo. Could just be a lighting issue, though.

Also, the bamboo on the stem side is shorter from the knuckle than on the bowl side. You compensated with the stem being a bit too long from bamboo to saddle and a bit short from saddle to button. I think the double ridge on the saddle draws the focus to itself.

I like the color contrasts and the idea behind the pipe.

I like it Ryan. For those that critiqued it here are a couple things to consider:
1. If you don't drop the bowl below the shank, the bowl can look too small or weirdly proportioned because the knuckles of the bamboo drop below that line and the bowl can end up looking like it's just stuck on the end of the bamboo. I did it once and it didn't look right. Dropping the bowl lower helps with balance.
2. A lot of bamboo pipes use stainless steel tenons, which means you need a longer saddle to glue it into. Seems to me like Ryan spaced bowl to knuckle, knuckle to knuckle, and knuckle to saddle fairly well. In order to do that and have enough space to properly adhere the stainless steel tenon, you would need to cut the bamboo short on one end.

I'm not saying any of the critiques are wrong, I just don't see those things as a problem for the reasons I listed. Focusing on minutiae is important, but you have to keep an eye on overall compositional balance, too, and I think Ryan did that well. I'd smoke the heck out of this thing.

I recant my point about the distance between saddle and knuckle. I think what caught my eye wasn't the distance was the way the stem dips before the ring. Most of the pipes I've seen with bamboo have a more gradual curve.

And I should have said before that I couldn't get anywhere close to this good with bamboo. It's a lot easier to see than to do it.

Thanks everyone, 'specially you Todd.
Actually the critiques are not all wrong, but also I think they are kind of moot. In spite of anything that could be different, I freaking love this pipe. It has this weird combination of things going on, chunky but sleek and compact looking but pretty decent size too (Its actually 5.4").
If I set out to make this pipe again tomorrow theres a lot that would be tweaked differently. I think the stummel was started about 8 months ago, the bamboo fitted sometime since then and the stem was just shaped this week. So, the way I look at pipe making has changed a lot in that time. I think one started today would be better in a lot of ways, but this one ain't too damn shabby neither and I don't know if I'd like the next one better personally.

Nicely done!
Personally, I would have taken the shank a tad longer, but that's being full of crap!
