I like the stummel a lot. I would suggest:
- The plateaux on the bottom looks great, but I want it to follow the line, profile-wise, that the rim of the bowl has. Perhaps even a curve outward to the front to counterpoint the curve in the back.
- I'm thinking the shank face should be angled more,kick the bottom of the shank face out more.
What sort of stem are you planning on using?

The stummel looks like it has tons of potential. I see your concern though with the angle of the mortise. Even straight the pipe will be canted forward quite a bit. It will look better bent though, and that will only increase the difficulty.
Regardless, it looks like a very nice stummel.
What are your plans for the stem?
