Osage Orange Bowl
I made this for my mother-in-law for Christmas. Heath found the log at the dump last month and brought it home.....wish he would have grabbed a few more pieces. It was amazingly easy to turn, even on my little 12x18 wood lathe. I can't wait to get some more.
It is about 9" in diameter and just about 4.5" tall

No shank, no stem, no airway... and the chamber profile is a mess. And the SIZE! That'll hold a full pound of tobacco, and even Sasquatches don't smoke that much in one sitting. What were you thinking?

Re: Osage Orange Bowl
I have to admit, I'm little sad to see that you couldn't figure some clever way to incorporate a pencil shank somewhere on this thing...GEESH!

Very nice. Osage is one of my favorite woods. Makes nice pipes too.
That tree was very happy before it was cut. Look at the size of those rings!

Re: Osage Orange Bowl
Osage grow like weeds around here. If I go to the dump every day I could have my pick of a freshly cut tree whenever I want. It is probably easier to find than just about any other wood here in KC. I have some really big pieces of Walnut I hope to get into this month too, should be fun. Now I just need to sell some pipes so I can start saving for a bigger lathe.
This one should do nicely

They grow quite a bit slower around here and are much less common. I have made a few pipes from some I was given that has 30-40 rings from the top to the bottom of the bowl. Gorgeous stuff.
Be warned that bowl turning can be just as addictive as pipe making.

Very nice work Scottie! I was not paying close attention until I started reading though, and expected to see a pipe stummel. Still and all, very nice indeed.
It does. Jason gave me a piece when we were out at Premal's in March, and it is smoking very well.Jthompson1995 wrote:Very nice. Osage is one of my favorite woods. Makes nice pipes too.
Oh yeah, this is the top of the food chain in lathes. The Powermatic is a nice machine, but it ain't even close to a Robust.oklahoma red wrote:Better yet: http://www.turnrobust.com/Images/Americ ... t_1200.jpg

That is a beautiful bowl.
I have used it before, but found it hard as a rock when dried, but the color is wonderful.
It always makes me think of a sun set.
What finish did you use?
Todd

I wet sanded from 220 to 600 with mineral oil. Then I dry buffed it on the lathe with an old sock and topped it with a good coat of bees wax. It gave it a really warm glow. The first thing Heath said was that it wasn't shiny enough

That's what you get for using one of Heath's old socks. TOXIC!! Surprised there was any finish left at all! Watco is good for lathe work. Build it up in multiple coats.scotties22 wrote:I wet sanded from 220 to 600 with mineral oil. Then I dry buffed it on the lathe with an old sock and topped it with a good coat of bees wax. Re: Osage Orange Bowl
You can even add Watco or another drying oil on top of the mineral oil and it will still dry, with properties of both oils. In other words, it won't be as hard as straight Danish or boiled linseed oil, but it will dry and take a higher sheen when buffed than straight mineral oil will do.oklahoma red wrote:That's what you get for using one of Heath's old socks. Re: Osage Orange Bowl
I'll keep that in mind. I'm starting all over again in the finish department to say the least. I have some Danish Oil and have used it a few times on bowls with good results. This was the first bowl I had wet sanded and it worked really well. I did see a video on You Tube where the guy used a citrus cleaner to wet sand....thoughts?
