variation on a pewit :

Post by bluesmk »

Hi all,
Just finnished this. I have an old Stanwell hanmade "pewit" shape that modeled for this one. Bowl is shaped more like the river stone shape in my album.Image

Hey Dan... That's purty. Nice stain, just my style. Is that horn on the extension? If so, what kind?

Great work indeed! The bowl and the shank are very pretty. For my eyes the stem is a little bit too long, or the junktion from the saddle to the button looks someway out of round - but that's only my subjective mind!

Very nice extension and all the colors fit very well. I would be courios how the stummel should look with a little bit shorter fishtail stem...

Good eye, Heinz! I think that's a great comment -- the long stem is kind of a surprise; you're looking for something a bit shorter when you see the pipe as a whole. Not to say that's a big objection, mind. Nice pipe.

That's a *really* nice piece of horn there!

I also really dig the pipe. It's a great interpretation. I also disagree about the stem length. For this pipe, I think it's just about perfect. The long stem gives it an elegant length that, in my opinion, embodies the spirit of this type of shape.

Nice work!

Kurt,
Thank you. I just can in from the shop with a picture I wanted to post, but something is wrong with the site....it won't upload the pic. It's a picture of my Stanwell that modled for that pipe, and mine interpretation...side by side, for comparison.

Personally, I like your pipe better than the Stanwell.

Yes, your pipe is much more better then the original! My comments earlier in this thread were given before I could see the new pics - in comparisson to the Stanwell you did a very good job with your interpretation.

I like long pipes, but I'll keep my comments for your pipe still alive: I would be courios how a little bit shorter fishtail would look on your pipe. Never the less it's of course beautiful as it is...

LOL!

That stem is just right Dan...

Let's remember, that a commenting on things as athetics are 100% subjective, not to be confused with comments concerning things like gaps between stummel and stem, centering of draft hole, thickness of the bit, etc.

"the stem is too long" is like saying "I don't like that color" IMHO...

Of course, I get paid to point out others design mistakes, so maybe I'm bias.

Dan, I like yours better than the Stanwell too. The overall shape is very appealing, and the insert is beautiful. I think the stem legnth fits the pipe wonderfully. Very nice work!

Jeff? Is that you? Account troubles?

I disagree, but I will make a new post for the philosophical discussion on aesthetics.

Dan, nice pipe. I almost think your pipe is an apple or billiard. The thing about a pewit that makes it a pewit is the pointy bottom, if I understand correctly, and that is where you adapted things a bit. Not a bad thing mind you, just an observation.

Tyler,
I'm getting ready to go to bed and just saw this post. It does come to a point, just not as accute as the Stanwell. I'll post afew pics tomorrow morning......it is an interpretation, and I didn't mean to cause such a fuss!

Tyler,
You may call it an Apple, or a Billiard, but I beg to differ. It has none of those elements in it . The Pewit was so named after the Lapwing shore birds eggs shape. I've made this shape before, but a little flatter...it's actually oval as you can see. As I stated in the original post it's a variation. As in a musical score, a grand classic recipe, I've taken certain elements I'm fond of, and used them, some I've change and molded into my own. The pipe I made before reminded me of river stones around here, we used to skip across the river when we were kids,I'll include that from my album. Apple or billiard, no.
I'd like to thank you all for your comments, I worked all night and I'm tired, and I'm tired of this.
