I have one of these and it works well. If I have one complaint about it is that there is not a lot of room between buffs. You have to be careful, if you are working with on one buff that the other doesn't grab the pipe out of your hands. Other than that, its great.
I ground the threads off one end of the threaded rod and that goes into the drill chuck in the headstock. The other end of the threaded rod was faced smooth and a small indentation was made with a drill bit. A live center is placed in the tail stock and placed into the small indentation of the rod. I have four buffs spaced out on it and it works great. I found the idea for this on the web somewhere and now I can't find the link. I'll keep looking and post it if I find it.
