Money tracking

Post by TreverT »

I was thinking about possibly posting something to my blog about the money tracking database file I've put together over time & use. I worked with a few off-the-shelf business accounting packages but they are all almost universally WAY more than is needed for simple income & expense tracking for a pipemaker's small output. Besides, we have a professional-level accounting program from our accountants called EBP that handles our yearly tax calculations, income, etc. What I wanted was a handy reference to answer those pesky questions of, "Are we really making money?", "What do we make per hour?", "How many hours do we work?", etc - plus with a useful monthly money goal page where we can set what we *want* to make and let it break down our goals into weekly production requirements.

Would it be helpful for anyone else to use something like this? If so, I can post the blank template to my blog along with explanations of what things are. It's an Open Office database file, so it should be openable in most anything. It might be useful for figuring out how much one is really making after subtracting out material costs, workshop and computer hours, bank deductions, currency exchange losses, etc.

Note - If you're spending sixteen hours on each pipe and selling them for $250, be braced to despair...

That's awsome, Trever. I'd love to see it in action.

I'd be very intersted in this templete too, Trevor, thanks very much for offering it! I'll just be depressed at first, I'm sure, but I would like to see how bad it is, and hopefully set some realistic goals over the next few years. Right now I'll be content if I can partially offset expenses. So far I've got a lot of offset, and nothing to offset them with!
