I know a few of the Turkish carvers use some sort of wine coloring, but i have no clue what it is. Perhaps you could ask them/ Sadnha Yanik sells a good bit on ebay and uses the stain. Why not try him?

If you are in Eskisehir Turkey, you have access to more meerschaum resources than these here briar guys. You should have enough waste material, cheap little meers, or rejects that you could experiment with wine, stains, colored waxes, smoke baths, etc. And you should have plenty experienced meerschaum carvers locally that might share their trade secrets. If you find something out, let the forum know your latest trick!
