Hey Comrades,
out of my workshop with a sea view i was inspired to do this shape.I used some Plateau-Bruyère extra dry from Tuskany, ebonite cumberland stem is like always hand cut with a tapered bit...etc,etc.
As always fell free...
Best,
Abi

Re: Smooth & bent Dublin
That is a gorgeous pipe.
The stem (is that an extension?) bothers me a little. Probably just a lighting effect but it looks unpolished just where the taper begins. Also, I still don't think that the lip is appealing at all.
I cannot say anything about the stummel except that it looks great.

Hey Leus,
the stem is from one piece of ebonite - no extension ,the saddle is drilled concave so that the light focuses inside an that's why the different complexion appears. What can i say about the lip,it is for teeth clenching smokers and i had no complains yet from unsatisfied customers .The bit is tapered into the bit 1,3 mm ,pipe cleaner test - yes.

Abi

Re: Smooth & bent Dublin
Abi,
Wonderful piece.
When working the stem and shank, do this as the same operation. Keep the stem in the shank when doing the final sanding and buffing. There appears to be some rolling of the edges in this area. Then both parts will be flush.

Hey Bruce,
I appreciate you thought on this detail and will keep it in mind .I generally finish it that way but pipe crafting is and will always be like a mirror - every detail reflects the working process and of course the whole outcome showing in the end the true face of the pipe.
Best,
Abi

Abi,
Very nice. The wood looks great and the stem is quite interesting. Your style translates nicely to briar.

Comrade Abi,
this is a beautyful pipe, no doubt!
But - quite frankly - I like your olive-stuff with those voluptous curves and matching grain so much better ...
Cheerio!

I appreciate your thought on this Walle, but while pipe carving i can not ignore the beauty and rich potential that is hidden in this root of the Mediterranean coast called Briar.Would it not be ignorant and at least sad if one has all the tools that life can provide with so one can explore the world of pipe-shaping through the prism of different materials and techniques, but ignores all of it just to walk through with "eyes wide shut" clenching on to the one thing he knows and fells save with .Walle wrote: But - quite frankly - I like your olive-stuff with those voluptous curves and matching grain so much better ...
Of course i will continue to shape pipes in olive wood voluptous like Rembrandt's Ladies, and the "pipe in the hat Walle homage " is anyhow close at hand !
Cheerio,
Abi
