Entering, without a doubt. I've already started my drawings. The problem is, though, you've got to make something distinctive and unique, but such that the Butz Choquin artisans can reproduce it. You're also limited to a certain size. For me, that means going back to my roots, and revisiting basics learned in art school *long* ago.

This is going to be *tough*.

I am going to enter. Also, a buddy of mine who is a pipe smoker and Industrial Designer is going to try his hand at making a pipe for the contest as well.

Heck what if the first pipe he ever makes wins that contest? Wouldn't THAT be something. He would not be welcome at my house ever again lol.

I am making at least two pipes for the contest. One to learn from, and one to make for real and enter.

I probably won't be entering considering that I've only made 3 pipes so far, and I smoke all three. Maybe next year.

They haven't had a pipe carving contest in quite a while (a couple of years or so), so you never know when the next one will be. You have plenty of time to make one, and who knows, you may get a picture of your pipe in the magazine. Better yet, you may get a trip to France!! The more the merrier. :D

Random,

Welcome to the forums!

If you look at my first post in this thread, there is a link to the Pipes and Tobaccos Magazine article about the contest. (The link is not obvious...it is slightly smaller font and says, "P&T Pipe Carving Contest.")

If I can come up with something that I'm confident with it being a unique, but play on a traditional design that can be mass produced by August, I'll enter...

But, I'll have to be really secure on it's uniqueness, and IMO that significantly decreases it's possible reproduction, but I'm sure they could handle just about anything...

It should be interesting...

Well, if I think about it in those terms, I will most likely have to make 4 pipes for this contest

Costs nothing to enter Random and if they don't pick it then you are still part of a very big club.

The worse thing they can do is send you a postcard explaining how stiff the competition was and how hard it was to choose only 10 from the huge number of entries.... and how surprised they were with the quality of work submitted........etc etc

can you tell I have been rejected from a painting competition or two in my time :D
