Re: The Pipe Guys Shop
The Shop is now open for business. Micah of Yeti Pipe Co., James Gilliam of JSEC Pipes, Kurt Huhn, and Wayne Teipen all have some fantastic work available. Feast your eyes!
Re: A Dublin
Though this is the first pipe you have shared with the forum, I assume this is not the first pipe you have made. If it is, you should quit your day job. The balance of the pipe is very nice. Proportionally I think it came out just as you intended; a "chubby" dublin. I actually think ...

Re: Pipe # 6 Tom Eltang influenced Billiard
Yes I mean leave more wood on the bowl. I think a more formidably sized bowl would have been more appropriate here; all the more tobacco that can be stuffed inside of it.

Re: A Pipe Shape Chart--With a Modern Twist
Rad, We're working on fixing the Author issue! Sorry about that one. Ernie, Our first draft of the chart was pretty much ALL Danish and American, and rightfully so, but we had so many duplicate makers we decided to add in some variety. At the risk of sounding like I have an opinion  (oh...

Re: A Pipe Shape Chart--With a Modern Twist
Yes we're aware of the IE problem
Unfortunately it's quite complicated to fix for people who aren't skilled programmers; we're considering some new theme options and other solutions. Thanks for the feedback!

A Pipe Shape Chart--With a Modern Twist
Hey guys! I'm really excited to announce a new Pipe Shape Chart/Guide that we are releasing at The Pipe Guys which I hope you will all love as much as we do. We put a lot of time and effort into it, and made it using information and opinions gathered from right here on the forum, so it's as much you...

Re: Pipe # 6 Tom Eltang influenced Billiard
With regard to the compound, unfortunately your best bet would have been not to load the wheel up so much. If you're not achieving a good result after polishing, it's likely because you need to sand more extensively with the higher grits (320-600), not because you're not buffing it correctly. A very...

New Pipe Blog
Hey Guys, Haven't been very active on the forum in quite some time--hurricane Sandy messed up our pipe shop pretty good, but we took the opportunity to dream up and build a new pipe blog. We'll be writing articles about lots of pipe-related subjects, sharing news, and developing an entirely interact...

Re: New one from Cooper Pipes CP-27
I can't believe nobody commented on this. That's a great looking pipe, man! You did a good job shaping the bowl. The only thing I'm not thrilled with is the stain color. Even so I'd be glad to have a pipe like this on my shelf.

Re: Chamber bit woes!
I've had very bad experience drilling with the spade bits on the lathe, although recently I read some posts about cutting down the shank to make it more stout. I haven't tried that yet. I've read some other posts from some of the more experienced guys on the forum that said profiled S&D bits are...

Re: Three Chubby Billiards
I have to agree with the above post. These are more like nosewarmers than "chubby" billiards. I do think the tobacco chamber walls are a little too thin on these. If they were significantly thicker, it would also help to balance out the proportions of the pipes overall. Being that the bowl...
Re: Acorn
Look at that. Uberhuman beat me to the punch on the line of the bowl! Haha.
Re: Acorn
The fit between your stem and stummel is quite good. Looks like you don't have any gaps at all. Great work. :D I do have two suggestions. First I'd suggest bringing the "chin" back a little bit. Notice on the Ardor pipe that the front of the bowl starts with a more severe taper curvature a...

Cory, Obviously there's a bit of tension in this thread and I want to alleviate that as best I can, but also have this be a thread which you gain valuable information from. That's the point of this whole forum, after all--sharing valuable information and experience with people who want to enter the ...

Re: #10 - Never Again...
Mr. Askwith is a much better pipe maker than I am, so I won't argue with him. On the other hand, I'm not sure this case was purely a matter of taste. There was at least one significant flaw mentioned. I do think it was a mistake to sell the pipe--that's just my opinion. I've made a thousand mi...

Re: #10 - Never Again...
I have two questions. 1. Is the draught hole at the middle/top of the chamber? If so, obviously the smoker won't be able to get very far. 2. Why would you sell a pipe that you hated? A very good piece of advice that was passed on to me early on by Stephen Downie was this... Don't sell a pipe that is...
Re: Barrel
I agree with the previous two posts. It really helps to get a picture of a pipe from a really good maker and keep it with you during your shaping process, so you can take a look periodically and see how far off you are. It doesn't have to be identical, but by imitating great pipe makers, you build g...
