burning the stem while drilling

I noticed it right away. I was just waiting to see who would be the perv to point it out. I'm surprised it took this long for someone to comment on it.

I keep a block of carnauba handy and touch it to the drill bit before starting then a few times during the hole after clearing the flutes. if it melts quick lets me know the bit is getting too hot.

Yes, I found something similar that works for me now. I chuck the 12 inch bit on the headstock, after having piloted an inch or so of with the stem on the headstock using the standard method, then slowly and steadily pushed the stem rod onto the drill bit by hand. This allowed me to quickly clear the chips, accurately meet with the button hole, and prevent overheating. I also used beeswax as lube. It's treating me well. thanks guys for the input.
