Front/Back of the bowl??

Post by scotties22 »

What camp are you in? Here is a picture that I have very crudely numbered 3 part of the bowl. Please name them in order. There is no right or wrong, I just want to see what everyone calls them.

Please excuse the crappy numbers....I don't have photoshop and paint was not cooperating with me.

I call 3 the back because I shape it after I shape the opposite side.
1 is the chin and I call 2 either he heel or the bottom of the bowl.

And feel free to just say I'm wrong.

Don't worry bondarev, the majority isn't always right. Your logic makes perfect sense to me and Tyler too. Don't let these luddites convert you with there borg mentality.

1. heel
2. bottom
3. face/front

The opposite side of number 1 is the back. And, 1 and 2 could both be referred to as the heel as in the heel of one's foot. And 3 can alternatively be referred to as the chin but I typically think of chin as a heel that sticks out as in a Castello 55.

I see now I should have drawn my arrow to #2 a bit higher. What I was looking for was:

1. Chin
2. Cheeks (heel is what I would call it as marked)
3. Back of bowl

I was waiting for Wayne to say that #3 was the front and then I was going to ask him why. Because if #1 is the chin how can #3 be the front.....my chin is under the front of my face after-all. I was bored and looking to start a bit of fun......now Wayne's answer has really confused me and I don't know what to do

As drawn
1.Chin
2. Bottom
3. Back

I would consider the "heel" to be the chin, bottom, and cheeks all together.

Hey, who switched the numbers. I edited my answer because I had 1 and 3 backwards. Sorry for the confusion. At least now you know the correct answer.

I've always referred to the cheeks as the lower part of the bowl closest to the shank on each side. Hence, that part being the face or front. Your cheeks aren't on the back of your head are they? Where's your heel? Again, back side of the pipe. As for the chin, there isn't a part of the pipe called the chin. Chin on a pipe is typically an undesirable term used to describe a heel with too much material left on it. Shapes like the Castello 55 and the skater leave material there on purpose but it's debatable whether it's still desirable or not.

I sure hope this clears things up for what 98% of you pipemakers out there. I'm starting to feel like Marshal Mathers now.

Desirable or not, it's still called a chin. So are we to believe that Wayne is hiding something on the back of his head?
