The end of the shank is shaped like a teardrop (usually rotated in some manner other than the wider "drop" being at six o'clock) and normally incorporates a cap of some contrasting material. I have also learned a lot from this years PITH. I never would have tried a military mount without some outside pressure. Now I have made 2 other sized bits and have made a few more military mounts with different brass sizes.
I also received a very nice pipe in return, and received a very helpful review on my effort.
I would be up for bamboo or an oval shank.
I am not clear on the teardrop with an extension concept.
Perhaps the proposer could post a photo?

Thanks guys, now I understand. I would prefer to do a bamboo, but am willing to do an oval or teardrop.
Since I free hand my stummels, an oval or a tear drop would not be as big a stretch for me.

Are there any more suggestions before we take a vote on shape/feature? I'm sure there's a bunch of people still on holiday vacation, so I'll wait until later next week to create the poll. Hi everyone, I would first off like to apologize for my short coming with last years PITH. Life had thrown some pretty challenging obstacles at me and of course my number one priority is my children. Now that things are starting to settle in and normalize I am getting my shop back in order and will get back to where I left off and can hopefully get more involved with the community again.
